the crux of the lyrics appear to tell of a tortured soul not wanting to age and leave behind the beauty and fame possessed in youth. And since the romantic era was one of passionate beliefs in mysticism and the afterlife, the lyrics seem to run parallel with the thoughts of that time--think goerthe, yeah I know a boring read. So suicide to vainly keep beauty in the afterlife is really a romanticism thing. Die young and leave a beautiful corpse--at the height of fame.

He must be someone in power because the heavens bowed before him. He must have killed himself by crashing his car, maybe on a starry night off a cliff. He asked what the rift was in the mystery. He is refering to the reason behind his suicide. He says he would bet his life that the man who died would pay the price of love to not let his light fizzle out

"dreams of his crash won't pass oh how they all adored him beauty will last when spiralled down." it occurred to me during a boring night watching the history channel that too many similarities to the story of james dean were present. Jd was absolutely adored by all of america in the early 1950's. He was the young iconic star of movies and tv. His "beauty" was so widely envied that he became what curt Cobain was to the late '80s early 90's crowd. He commanded such a following of women, that it was often said his squinted look could make you fall deep in love with him. So enraptured was america, that when, in 1955, at the youthful age of 24, he was killed in a terrible car crash, america mourned in a similar fasion to, once again, when Cobain died. Woman were said to have cried for months. Yet, his early death guarenteed him legendary status of being forever remembered at the heighth of his "beauty". The "golden ring" of any actor is of course an academy award. Dean was posthumously nominated for his first aa in 1956 for his movie 'giant'. Little known facts about jd: he has received more posthumous fan mail than any other person. He has also been mentioned in more hit songs than any other real person.

he just totally changed his seen in the last 3 albums this song is totally about hitler or christ but has anybody notice on the album shut your mouth and open your eyes he had a song called the devil loves you? And he was all about satan back then back in the afi-punk days it was all about be rebelious, don't listen to your parents like in "I wanna get a mohawk but mom won't let me get one" hes talking about being rebellious i swear something happened to davey and nobody notices... He turned sxe when sing the sorrow came out and now he's singing about something related to jesus in basically every song its just metaphorical so he can make the song relate to the latest scene being scene kids again like in affliction were you holding hands when my palms bled yeah that's definately about jesus but stop and think, half the kids are listening to afi just because davey has "emo hair" and they think theyre an emo band and their feeding that by making songs about jesus sound like suicide so I think this song is most definately about rather jesus because every song is by afi now

First of all, I think the Christ one can't be right. Sure, a few lines fit in, but there are too many that don't fit that interpretation, making it to sketchy to be right. I mean, if you intentionally write a song about something, you don't just write a few lines about it and then fill in the rest with gibberish. So that leaves Hitler, Lucifer, Cobain, and that Yoshi Mikimo guy. All three of these seem to make pretty good sense, except I saw no good explanation of the whole screaming bridge part relating to Yoshi. So that one is probably out, and Cobain's seemed a bit sketchy, although it was definetely possible. The two most plausible ones, I thought, were Hitler and Lucifer. So those two are the ones I've been considering. Take into account the video, and it seems like the song has to be about Hitler. But there were those few parts where "well, Hitler probably wouldn't go to a woman for advice" or whatever those guys said. And Lucifer tempting Eve fit in quite well there. Before I unveil my theory, let me remind you of all the people who said that Davey wouldn't write a song about Hitler because he is Catholic. Maybe my explanation will provide some solace for these fans. So, after careful consideration, I have concluded that Davey is portraying Hitler as an earthly embodiment of Satan! The two are obviously very similar, for there has been so much confusion on this song that could be about either of them. Look--they both started out okay, without enemies, but still with a lot of power. They were adored by many. Further along, they and their followers gained power and posed some sort of conflict against a religious entity. Both of their failures led to their eventual demise. And, as an added point, Hitler is definetely evil, as is Lucifer. So, Davey is not so much writing a song about Hitler or Lucifer because he is fond of either of them, but instead because he is comparing them. That's my theory. Obviously I can't say for sure whether it's correct, only Davey can. I would love to hear, directly from him, the exact interpretation of the song. Despite his current "popular" appearance, he seems like a very intelligent and poetic guy. But perhaps this song is to reamain forever a mystery. A verbose one.

The beginning of the song is about people's hope and faith in religion. The screaming "hook" and "twist" section is the speaker telling us that it's all an illusion. That the promised eternal life that we all strive for and believe we were promised does not exist and if it did, none of us would be worthy of it. And whether "Davey" is catholic is irrelevant. The lyrics are not necessarily his views, just the views of a hypothetical speaker. He (Davey) may be critical of the speaker. As for the video, who the hell knows. Videos are not supposed to be a roadmap to the meaning of a song. They may, in some cases, show some aspect of the meaning. Perhaps the Nazi-esque imagery symbolizes the fallibility of man and why we are unworthy of eternal life.
