Before I read the other comments, I thought it was a song about the other woman who was waiting for her lover to decide to leave his wife. It seemed that she was in a fight to win him and get him away from her. She is trying to do her best to wait and hang in their with him and they both needed each other to get through the ordeal. However, the other comments make a great deal of sense.

It speaks of a woman who's boyfriend has gone to jail/prison (or rehab) and in the beginning she's fallen apart. She holds on with what little she has. As she waits time drags on and is reminded by the time they had together with what he's left behind. She loves him, believes in him, and feels too weak to leave. It's through each of their strengths that they are able to hold on and walk the road together. She knows his brokenness, his mess-ups, and the poison that got him into trouble. She also knows of his remorse and transformation. She believes in the new man he's becoming. Waiting for him is a risk that both are willing to take. Through the process there will be doubts, fears, and questions but they will hold onto the future.

well I think it means that she don't want to leave him like she doesn't have the strength, you know,he won't go either like there staying there because they want it to work like me and my boyfriend we never kiss but anyways....

Adele wrote this song about a couple she met. After talking with them for awhile, she found out that the man was going into rehab for a heroin addiction, but they are still going to try to keep the relationship between him and his girlfriend. Adele was inspired by this, and wrote this song about what the girls point of view would be on this whole situation.

she is in a relationship with someone who has serious issues. she has tried to give up but their relationship is too strong"nothing will ever taint us." i think that the guy is probably going to rehab or maybe some time in prison.(Will he, will he still remember me?
Will he still love me even when he's free?
Or will he go back to the place where he will choose the poison over me?) -

I can relate to this song in a big way. I was engaged to an alcoholic for a year. He physically and emotionally was cruel to me when he was drunk, but when he was sober was kind and loving. I thought I should stay and "risk" it. I thought I couldn't make it without him. I thought he would change with some help. I didn't see an abusive man, I saw a poor little boy that needed my help. This is the mistake of so many woman in relationships like this.
The end result of that relationship was him almost killing me any OUR 2 month child in a drunken rage. He put both of us (me and my son) in the hospital.
Relationships like this never work. Don't risk it. -

In addition to the last interpretation, I think his problem is substance-related.. (the reference to choosing the "poison" over her).

She is in love with someone who is deeply troubled. People tell her to leave, for her own good, but she can't turn her back on him. He needs her, she needs him, neither of them leave, "he won't go, he can't do it on his own," just like "[she] won't go, can't do it on [her] own." They both know it is love, and are hoping that it will prevail over the challenges the world puts in front of them.
