Its about your life hitting rock bottom, not knowing what to do any more and then finally realizing that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that things can change.

Yeah this is about st overcoming his drug addiction: "that one last shot's a permanent vacation
and how high can you fly with broken wings?"

he seems to be saying that when he tells himself it's only one last injection of drugs it's really an addiction that he can't get rid of. His body is so damaged from the drugs.

And then suddenly he realises before it's too late in a kind of moment of nirvana: "it's amazing
with the blink of an eye you finally see the light"

and now tries to rescue other people in the same position "and I'm sayin' a prayer for the desperate hearts tonight"

This song is about bouncing back from the deepest pit of a drug addiction. I almost want to think the the line "when I lost my grip and I hit the floor" refers to the Aerosmith concert that Steven Tyler literally collapsed on stage.

The entire chorus is his realization that his choices were what got him in the mess and that there is hope and light at the end of the tunnel. "Oh it's amazing, when the moment arrives you finally see the light." He also comments on every other individual with their own addictions and how he has been there and survived and prays that they too can change their ways with "And I'm sayin a prayer for the desperate hearts tonight."

The the most interesting line in the song to me is "life's a journey not a destination, and you just can't tell just what tomorrow brings." -- So true

To recap: Heavy drug addiction-->coming back from rock bottom-->inspiring hope in those who think they have already reached the point of no return

I don't believe the songs about drug abuse.
I believe the song is about someone going thru an episode of depression. "I kept the right ones out
And let the wrong ones in" I believe refers to choosing the wrong (destructive) people as friends and shutting out those who could've pulled (him/her) out of their nosedive.
"There were times in my life
When I was goin' insane, Tryin' to walk through the pain" further strengthens my belief that this is about a mental health crisis.
"Yeah, I thought I could leave
But couldn't get out the door" - As in being committed in an institution. "I was wishing that I would die" further backs up the suicidal ideations of this person as in "That one last shot's a permanent vacation".
"And I'm saying a prayer
To the desperate hearts tonight" - Acknowledges that there are others out there feeling this way and having self-destructive thoughts.
"You have to learn to crawl
Before you learn to walk
But I just couldn't listen
To all that righteous talk" - As in being in a state of denial that this is happening to me. And claiming to not need anyone's help.
"With the blink of an eye
You finally see the light
It's amazing
That when the moment arrives
You know you'll be alright" - Referring to finally accepting the help he's being given and that things aren't really as bad as whatever led up to these desperate feelings.
"I was out on the street
Just tryin' to survive" - referring to all of the homeless folk out there who need help of this kind and aren't getting it. So they live their lives out day to day trying to cope and get by.
Thats my 2 cents, whats yours?

I think it's about a drug addiction that nearly went too far, but just as things were about to go beyond turning back he 'saw the light' and found a way within himself to get back on track.
he tells about how some bastard people think they know it all and told him what to do and how really they frustrated the shit out of him, and how you need to find the way within yourself. He thinks of the poeple who are in the position he was in, and prays for them that they will too find a solution, just as he did, and that the addiction doesn't take their lives away, because the feeling of knowing you are alright is amazing

While I realize this song is about drug addiction, it literally saved my life while I was going through a tough time. It was the story line of my life as far as I was concerned...in a abusive relationship, getting the tar beat out of me daily. The "when I hit the floor" line was the day I realized I had to get out or he would kill me...pounding my head off a concrete floor. "kept the right ones out" was the people who tried to help but I wouldn't let in....

After I left, I listened to this song over and over and it truly kept me from going back until I was strong enough to do it on my own.

I'm pretty sure the song is about suicide due to depression.
