'Everytime that I look in the mirror
All these lines on my face gettin' clearer
The past is gone '
...I think this means he's looked into the mirror and for the first time, he's seeing himself clearly, his true reflection. Sometimes we all get caught up in our everyday lives and troubles,we don't slow down for a moment and take our time to care about the things that mean the most.
Before you know it, a years gone by, then another one, and then another one. He's waking up to reality that he is getting older and his life is rushing past him-
'It went by like dust to dawn '
'I know nobody knows/Where it comes and where it goes'
He's thinking back to all that's gone and appreciating all the memories, the good and the bad, they all played a big part in who he is today and even if he dies tomorro, he's gonna appreciate his life but still keep on dreaming.
'Sing for the laughter 'n sing for the tears
Sing with me, if it's just for today,
Dream yourself a dream come true'

Sorry, but I have to disagree with the last statement. When he refers to lines on his face getting clearer, he's talking about looking in the mirror and noticing he's getting older. Aerosmith writing about cocaine... get a clue.

This song was the only one that Steven Tyler sang in his own voice...
...anyone read "Walk This Way" ?... It explains ALL their songs, so quit the monotony of -drugs this- and -drugs that-. some were, some weren't ... listen to the songs not the band.

If I recall right the band was in trouble when this song came out in the 1970's, This made them great. I love this song and I think it's about Dreaming to become great like they have.
From the chorus it says
"Sing with me, sing for the years
Sing for the laughter 'n sing for the tears"
Like keep singing for a long time, through great times, and hard times.
I have some album collection of a bunch of their great songs and it briefly explains some of the songs and it says that about "Dream On."

I agree with those of your that think the drug meaning is over-used. This song is about Tyler's desire to be someone and do something with his life. To continue to "dream until your dreams come true". Get off the drug kick, it doesn't always have to be about drugs. Tyler was 17, and wrote this song at the end of a summer as he was vacationing at his parent's lake house.

SING WITH ME SING FOR THE YEARS
sing for the laughter and sing for the tears
sing with me if its just for today
maybe tomorrow the good lord will take you away
it means to live life
because one day you might die
and like live it now...

This song does have undertones of the singer's former drug abuse. It's about how he comes to realize that all this time has passed while he was drowning himself in drugs and booze i.e. "the past is gone, it went by like dusk to dawn" he knows that he messed up and blames himself i.e. "everybody's got their dues in life to pay" "dream on" is basically saying that you have to move on with your life, despite what you may have done and make the most of whatever time you have left.

All it is saying is that no matter what others say, keep your dreams because your dreams are the only thing that make life amazing.

If everyone would pay attention to the snorting sound that he makes after the first set of vocals, you would understand that...yes, this song has a double meaning.
One representing the past and the dream of the future.

When I listen to the song I think he is trying to say that getting old is part of life, don't get old and not have lived life....to live life till you die.. That's kind of why he says "Sing with me, sing for the years/Sing for the laughter 'n sing for the tears/Sing with me, if it's just for today"

Steven wrote this song when he was seventeen. I think he wrote this while thinking about life his future and everyone expectations of what his should be. Lot of reflecttion, lot of fear of the future and what it holds in store. This can be heard through the haunting music in it.

Not ALL songs are about drugs, BUT... stereotypically people use a mirror when they do cocaine. In fact they do "lines". When you have lines on a mirror and look into the mirror, you appear to have lines on your face. Then as you snort the lines, the lines go away or "get clearer". If you listen, you can hear him snort after he says this.
The remainder of the song can definitely support this conspiracy as well. "The past is gone" etc.

This isn't at all about drugs. Steven wrote this when he was in high school, he didn't get introduced to drugs until after the formation of Aerosmith.
