I believe this song is about "lost" love, meaning he loves someone but they don't see it.

I think this song is about loving someone and not having them recognize your feelings. "Am I being too cryptic?

Am I being too obscure?" suggests he is making suggestions about his feelings but his love interest is not aware or reciprocating the feelings.

It's about loving someone who doesn't want a serious relationship because she's been hurt too many times. "If I had my way I’d cut the calluses off your, off your breaking heart If I could get past the sternum. Cauterize those wounds with every kiss I could give to you. I’m holding your heart in my hands, The reason it still beats." He wants to tell her he loves her, and he won't hurt her, but doesn't know how she will react, so he throws hints out there. "Am I being too cryptic? Am I being too obscure?"

It's about a girl being in love with a guy that doesn't love her back, thus making her depressed and broken-hearted. and the whole time he's somewhat scolding her for walloing in her own self-pity because little does she know, that he really does love her. but he's lying to her [and himself in someways] because he knows he's not good for her. he thinks she can do better.

and in return, it's breaking his heart to see her hurting over him- and he feels that he would do anything to take that pain away, especially knowing he's the cause of it.

The whole "am I being to cryptic, am I being to obscure?" part has to do with the fact that she is so blinded by her own self-pity, she can't see that she's hurting him as well by just waiting around for him to realize he's in love with her. and the reason it hurts him so much, is because he wants her; it's difficult for him to turn her down... but he does it to protect her. and she refuses to see it.
