One of the best lyrics ever. This song was written in the early 90s but still perfectly describes our society today in the US with its religious madness, believing America to be gods own country with an insane president claiming to follow Jesus ...
If Jesus agrees with our society, I'm fearful that he is inside of me !

it's about American mentality and how 'we' call ourselves Christians in a rather hypocritical way while being blinded by arrogance ('I don't need to be a global citizen, cause I live in the U.S.A'). I believe that when he says 'and I'm fearful that it's inside me', meaning the American mentality, also makes the interpretation clear.
This is back in the day when BR wrote several great songs. The answer being another of my favorites.

It's about money. "We've got the American Jesus see him on the interstate. We've got the American Jesus he helped build the presidents estate." In the end of the song it repeats one nation under god because everything revolves around money.
