This song is actually about seeing your soul at a poker table. For Justin Vernon(Bon Iver) it was a dark and humbling experience. This was his description of the song’s intent.

Personally I think this song is about depression, and how hard life can be sometimes "when your moneys gone and your drunk as hell" and when you put everything out there sometimes but you get let down and hurt so bad. And every little thing you look at could remind you of what you've lost. "whatever could it be that has brought me to this loss" when you think "why me, why now" and at the end of the song he says that even though I'm hurt by you, your love will be safe with me
