I agree wholly that the song is about the experience of person in love with an alcoholic and coming to the realization of the futility of trying to save someone from themselves and their additions. It is about the pain of watching someone you love slowly self-destruct one drink at a time until they are a shell of their former selves.
therefore, the description by Concrete Blonde describing the song as being about a "vampire" is correct. It is alcohol that is the vampire that sucks the very life out of an individual suffering from alcoholism. This song is about a person giving you their experience of the hopeless and helplessness having to stand by a watch a loved one deteriorate before eyes. -

i agree that it is about a co-dependant relationship with an addict (joey being the addict). either she was actually in such a realtionship or she is a very good actress because you can hear the heartbreak in her voice. it is the desperation of loving someone beyond limit and knowing there is not a damn thing YOU can do to help them or yourself.

i fully agree and alot of people see it as joey being a addict and it makes alot of sense that way but the fact people everywhere will tell you that the concrete blondes said that this was about a vampire is also alittle weird because him being a vampire makes no sense with "somewhere passed out on the floor" because vampires are suppose to be immortal unless they got in a fight and he ran off and tryed to kill himself because his world is so dark without her and he doesnt wanna be alone anymore. In the beginning it says "joey, baby, dont get crazy, detours and fences, i get defensive" its everything a human and vampire couple has to face together is strainning their love which causes the fight. BUT theres another problem "Joey, honey, I've got the money" would support the addict joey not the vampire joey so who knows what the concrete blondes were thinking

It's about living with a person addicted to drugs or alcohol or being in a relationship with them and feeling powerless to help as they stand by and kill themselves "I just stand by and let you fight your secret war".
"Joey" is the addict and he leaves after an argument and doesn't come back. Someone is worried sick about him and goes out looking for him and panics when they can't find him. The person recalls about how they found Joey passed on the floor and how they're always crying and blaming themselves for whatever happens to Joey.
It's a very sad, haunting song that will stay with you forever when you understand it.
