I think this song is about a time when Dave was going through depression..."Yes I have done wrong" He's feeling guilty about something...questioning himself to God...."why do I feel as if I'm in too deep...Deep in depression? "As heavy as a stone and as blue as I go" He's not only feeling blue, but he's tired of being depressed. "I was just wondering if you'd come along...To hold up my head when my head won't hold on" I think almost every person has gone thru depression at some time in their life. He knows he is depressed and is asking for help.....but his strength to overcome it shows thru when he says"If not I'll go alone.........I will go alone, but he does want to stay in someones arms and see a smile.....Maybe a smile from God?

I think the song's about him truly loving a girl and her not quite loving him back the same way. She feels the same way but can't he'll always be there like "a stone" when she is ready but he'll always be there loving her.
