This song is about a person who is watching life pass him by. His brain is telling him to go out and take advantage of his youth, but all he really wants to do is sit back and think of all the things he could have done, but feels like he can't anymore; such as lost loves.

This song is about not voicing his opinion in a relationship ("my brains repeating 'if you've got an impulse let it out' but it never makes it past my mouth") so instead, he settles for what she want and wonder what his love could have been.

So it says "You've got an impulse, let it out" which means "Just do what you want". "this is the sound of settling" to me, means that you are you are settling for something you want, something you have been waiting for but haven't had the chance to reach for it because you have been afraid what others think but now you don't give a shit about it because you only have one life. Live it the way you want and don't regret anything! Danii

This song means a lot to me.
My interpretation, is that he's basically looking through his life, and figuring he'll settle. his mind is telling him to keep pushing to be happy, for everything to be perfect, to "live in the moment" (my brains repeating "if you've got an impulse, let it out" but they never make it past my mouth) but instead of trying to have a better life, he's settling for what he's got. he's realizing his life isn't the most ideal one, but it alright. and he's okay with it. I like that.
