Ellie Goulding: Lights Meaning

Lights Lyrics

I had a way then losing it all on my own
I had a heart then but the queen has been overthrown
And I'm not sleeping now the dark is too hard to beat
And I'm not keeping now the strength I need to push me

You show the lights that stop me turn...

I think this son is about either alien abduction or sexual abuse of children.

Ellie has said HERSELF that the song is about her fear of the dark!! So all of you people who were molested as children, STOP thinking that every song out there is about your crappy childhood. You idiots will listen to ANY song and think its about abuse! Get some counseling darn it!

Some of the above interpretations I can understand,.but I personally think she speaks of the control a man has over her.. Could be her abuser or could be a lover whose grasp she cannot escape. I say this because this song speaks to me.. I am in a relationship where his light is "calling me home". "I had a heart then but the queen has been overthrown", he is now in control of her heart

For anyone that has studied Hatha Yoga it will ring a bell...she is talking about her guru. Her light.

When meditating you can lose yourself to the point where you don't know if you are still breathing. It is also a goal of an aspiring yogi or yogini to be able to sit in complete stillness, like stone, in order to connect to the light within. Only by finding that still place will all be revealed. All will be understood.

In yoga, someone who meditates and follows a guru, practices knowing the difference between dreaming, sleep, and reality and not the aggregate of elements.

When we were children we were the closest we have ever been to "the Divine"...over time we drift away from our true self and concern ourselves with things that, in the end, are really not that important. Therefore we feel lost...homesick. We yearn for something we cannot describe. This yearning is your guru, your light, calling you back home...to the "Divine" ... To your source...

What is important is that we let our light shine, even in moments when we feel like there is no hope, or we when we feel alone, because we are never alone. The Divine is within us. The light is within us. Guru is with us.

"Live light, travel light, be the light, spread the light." -Yogi Bhajan

She already did a interview A year before the first idiot started discussing how he/she is trying to make a song fit them and how they allowed themselves to be sexually molested and how they touched did things to their bed-ridden grandparents when they were asleep.....

I think the song is a mix of abuse and being scared of the dark

The Absue takes place in the dark

"I'm not sleeping now, the dark is too hard to beat"
Saying that she will only go to sleep in light

"Noises, I play within my head
Touch my own skin and hope that I'm still breathing"
Stating that most likely the abuse took place in dark, or maybe she made noises to avoid noticing any unusual scary noises from the dark and after falling asleep in the morning she feels her skin to see if it's warm and she's breathing

And the significance of an unlocked door for her brothers and sisters means that the abuser hasn't got them. The abuser locks the doors to prevent escape.

And Calling me home is probably after escaping with her brothers and sisters the haunting memories still have a big impact on her which will haunt her, maybe she hears voices and has dreams.

And You shone the lights that stop me turn me to stone, indicates that the abuser shines a light on her to find her and she froze not knowing what to do and most likely never fought back because she was afraid of what would happen if she did, possibly death. She would probably try to hide when she heard the abuser coming and never found a spot and froze when he found her.

Basically the song touches up on her horrifying childhood of abuse, anger, hate, and being afraid of the dark.
Ellie Goulding had a hard childhood and makes a bad situation good with music. I am glad the abuser never killed her.

Sleep paralysis is definetely how I interpreted this song the first time I heard it. But being a pop star she probably also talks about the mind control she is under from the elite manipulating famous artists, either during her sleep or fully awaken. And the queen being one of the top "reptilian" and mind controller, she even mentions her role in the song.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

It sounds kind of like abuse but Ellie actually meant for it to be about her fear of the dark.

I believe this is about a battle with terrifying sleep paralysis. If you've ever had it you may see the connection (especially if it felt like alien abduction)

First verse. "I had a way then" When in the throes it's easy to describe but once you're back in reality it's impossible.
"losing it all on my own" You feel all alone, nobody understands what causes this. Nobody can relate. There's a fear of admitting to it because of the psychological labels you fear being given.
"I had a heart then" Sometimes looking back on a time in your life when SP happened every night can be nostalgic. Since you can get the impression of being visited by angels or aliens you are given a sense of significance instead of shame (from being labeled "crazy")
"but the queen has been overthrown" Your mommy can't protect you from this (especially significant if it's been happening since childhood. Some people try to pray to Jesus or their god so possibly queen = goddess
"And I'm not sleeping now" Pretty self explanatory. The experience is terrifying, and if it happens every time you lie down to rest you can become scared out of sleeping and eventually avoid it.
"the dark is too hard to beat" This isn't just the night's dark, there are "shadow creatures" that loom over your bed some nights.
"And I'm not keeping now/ the strength I need to push me" The very act of struggling against your invisible restraints is impossible sometimes. Also, after dealing with this turmoil for awhile you can be so sleep deprived and constantly scared that all other aspects of your life suffer.
    Chorus
Turning to stone = paralysis "Show me I'm not alone" = bedroom visitors/ abductors "When I'm alone" it's an individual experience nobody can relate to %100
"tell myself I'll be strong" Is all you can really do when in the throes and also during the day since you know it's just going to happen again. It rules your life.

"They're calling home"These lights can come in through the bedroom window as beams or balls. They can be glowing eyes or upward blowing purple rain. Now if you understand that as alien abduction (especially when you're younger) you can be told by these abductors that they are your real parents or their planet is your real home. In dealing with the after effects it can feel like you don't belong on this planet with these people.

I think lights is about a girl who is in an asylum. I got that from

"Noises, I play within my head
Touch my own skin and hope that I'm still breathing"

She has voices in her head and she keeps checking she's still alive.

The lights are the small crack of light that seeps in through her cell. When they come she freezes because the light means the people are coming to harm her.

"And I go back to when, my brother and my sister slept. In an unlocked place, the only time that I felt safe"

I got that her brother and sister witnessed her being taken away and she is worry it ruined their pure and sweet childhood.

    "The Queen has been overthrown"

I got that she had lost the one thing that kept her sane, such as a certain family member or an inciative that died.

Its obviously about the turmoil of suicide. "I had a way than, losing it all on my own"... she had her own plan and was in control to deal with her situation. " I had a heart than the queen has been overthrown.... she was in control of her emotions and has lost control of her feelings. "And I'm not sleeping now, the dark is too hard to beat" she has lost control, the darkness is ruling her heart and feelings. "And I'm not keeping now, the strength I need to push me" she is no longer strong enough to continueon... she is giving up. " you show the lights that stop me turn to stone (lights in the hospital when they r trying to save her} you shine them when I'm alone (she is completely alone in life besides medical staff. And so I tell myself that ill be strong, and dreaming whe they're gone (determined to end her life despite the efforts to save her). Cuz they're calling me... c me.. c me... (still determined the heavens r calling her and she should die). noises I play within my head, touch my own skin and hope that I'm still breathing ( recalling moments in her life that make her want to hold on, give her something she wants to eep living for). " and I think back to when my brother and sister slept, an unlocked place, (a happy childhood memory of family/friends/meaningful people that give her a reason to continue living). "The only time I feel safe" (gives her a reason to keep fighting.

I think shes talking about being sick, and fighting the sickness ( darkness ) when someone she loves gives her the strength to keep going when she least expects it.

I believe she is talking about a haunting past. That she remembers. It could also mean she was abused. I get this from... "I had a heart then but the queen has been overthrown"
Also "and I'm not sleeping now the dark is to hard to beat"
I think that line is her trying to escape the darkness but "the darkness is winning" also how she is afraid. Confused and scared.
It is a strong song with a great meaning and truly believe that this song is beautiful.

It's a metaphor. Being afraid of the dark in general. Evidently though, it's amplified. But it has little to do with abuse and more of like an Alice in Wonderland take on a phobia.

On a christian standpoint, I think this is almost a struggle in ones life, but stopping at the light and the call of God "Home" or to heaven... very good song... and inspirational.

i think its about not wanting to grow up, the battle between facing the corruption that lies ahead of her, as she will see more of that, and the innocence/childhood or "light" that's calling her home and leaving her, she is undecided in what she should do; she turns to stone
