I'm wondering if there could be a deeper meaning to this song. We all know that Eminem refers to himself as 'Slim Shady', and this is the star that Stan obsesses over. I'm wondering if this could be a sort of inner monologue to himself, an allegory of sorts of how he stands to lose everything due to his alter-ego. In the beginning, Stan appears to be a fairly well adjusted man who tries to communicate with his idol. However, he cannot keep up communication, and ends up dying, taking his young family with him. In his recent song 'when I'm gone' Eminem worries about the possible loss of his life as it stands due to his alter ego: Slim. 'We could be together' could be an attempt to reconcile the different aspects of his persona, which he fails to manage. Stan does not appear to be gay as he has a pregnant girlfriend, so this is why I have arrived at this conclusion. 'If you didn't wanna talk to me at the show, you didn't have to' could illustrate the extent of the situation, how in becoming Slim, he is totally separated from his true self. 'He wants to be just like you man, he likes you more than I do' struck me particularly strange as he claims to be his biggest fan, so this could refer to the way that the innocent youth look up to him. 'Sometimes I even cut myself'......his way of trying to feel because he feels himself disappearing into the persona of Slim. His speech becomes more disjointed through the course of the song, until he ends up high, drunk and plummeting over a bridge with his pregnant girlfriend in his car trunk. This is the death of Stan. I believe that Eminem could be looking to the death of his true self, the taking over of his stage persona. In the end it is simply Slim giving him advice, not realising that he is already dead, and Eminem is probably prophesising how he will know what he needs to do once it is too late, and is expressing fear at this. 'Damn', a mild expletive, is because few would care at the loss of who is truly is, because all the fans know is Slim. He's afraid that it will mean nothing.

That's what I think anyway =P

This song was performed with Dido. It’s about a fan’s obsession with Eminem, and he writes letters. Unfortunately, these letters end up lost in the post. Eventually, after six months of lost letters (only a few get through) It turns into a sick and perverted ’97 Bonnie & Clyde. He locks his girlfriend in the trunk of his car, gets totally pissed, goes driving on a freeway and drives of a bridge into the river. All the while he records a message to Eminem, ranting and raving under the influence of alcohol. The final scene is of Eminem replying to one of the letters that got through. Suddenly, the news comes on, and it shows the car in the river. At the end, Eminem uses a suprisingly mild expletive, “damn”.

This song is about a guy who has an obsession with slim shady and he keeps sending leeter after letter trying to get slim to write a letter back. But slim never returns those 5 letters so stan takes it in to his own hands he tells em that he was only sendin 1 last package. In the last few lyrics stan tells em that he is drivin 90 on the free way and that he drank a fifth of vodka and that if em falls a sleep that he better dream about how of that was all of his fault but then stan relises how is he going to send out the tape and he slams on the brakes and then you hear a crash in the water and then when em final gets back to him it is to late stan is already dead.

Stan is a song about a crazed fan who was sick in the head and idolized eminem so much that his anxiety escelates so much that his six month long letter spree leads him to tie his girlfriend up in the trunk and while being drunk and recording his "last package" to eminem he drives his car over a bridge. Finally eminem writes back, but it is too late.He sees on the news that someone resembling stans case killed himself by bridge also. Then he realizes it was him.

It's about what lengths a crazed fan will go,for another person, stan, eminem's fan attempts to reach eminem 3 times, each time getting proggesively stronger in anger, which ultimately ends in the fan's suicide, eminem then responds but realizes that he was to late, and that fan killed himself.

It's about what might happen when you get too obsessed with someone like Eminem himself, and take his lyrics too literally.

I personalty think that in this song slim was trying to prove the point that Stan had a life like his. Stan had looked to slim as hope that people like them can end up making it big because many of us like myself find someone like them with the same problem to overcome and look up to but slim was busy and Stan like many of us was scared because the person he looked up to had not shown their advice. He did the only thing he knew how to in the situation he killed himself and his pregnant girlfriend and made a tape telling slim he didn't care anymore because there was no hope for his life from his inspiration. When slim decided to write him back he said the guy needed counseling and that he wasn't dissing but he didn't want to see Stan with the same situation but he was to late in the end. The message was we all need someone to look up to because we all have demons to face in the end.

The thing to take away from all this was that Stanley Mitchell was a real person, and really commited suicide with his wife in the trunk. He was totally obsessed with Slim, and wanted to be just like him. When Slim said he was "busy" and couldn't answer the letter, he was in jail. When he got out, he found out about Stan, and wrote a song in his dedication.

It is not based on a true story, according to Eminem in an interview with VH1.
