I think that this song is about a relationship that is meant to be, but the guy can't commit to it. He liked the girl but he's not sure if he loves her hence the "this is a love song in my own way" but the relationship was based on sex, hence the "happily ever after below the waist"

-- basically saying that his ex girlfriend passed out so then he wrote in lipstick on her arm that it was over.

-- While they were dating, they were like best friends. now that its over, they don't even talk to each other anymore, and most likely hate each other because that's how most ex's are. and "not the other way around" part means that they were better off dating then hating each other.

This city says...

-- Meaning he couldn't commit to anything, wheather it was love or an emergency.

This meaning that everyone, including them, knew that their relationship was coming to a bitter end, they just didn't know the exact date it was gonna happen.

-- this part I could be completely wrong about. but it means I think anyways, that he's going to make her hate him the same way he hates her. [or make her feel the same way about him he feels about her, wheather its hate or not]. The "this is a love song in my own way" I think goes along with the other part "happily ever after below the waist." meaning that she got a new boyfriend and they were dating for sex, so he pretended to be happy for her or write her and her new boyfriend a "love" song when its not that at all, and that he knows they won't be together happily because they are just in it for the sex.

I think it's about him having a accadental one night stand w/ his friend so now the relationship is weird.

I agree that this is a song about a serious relationship that is based on sexual attraction and both of them wanting to commit but never being able to. I understand the situation they are talking about. The boy and girl have love for each other but for whatever reason, they are not "in love" hence, the reason why they can never really commit totally to each other. They are like, friends with benefits; instead of "just friends" they are best friends that happen to really really like each other...a lot. And that's why the guy says that they "are better off as lovers" rather than friends. But when the one of them tries to take their relationship to the next level the other backs down and "calls it quits". I mean, they try the relationship thing but it just doesn't work because like I said before, one is in love and one just loves the other person if that makes sense, hence the lyrical line "cast a spell on the west so that you think of me the same way I think of you".Which can also be interpreted as the guy saying that he wishes that the girl thought of him as just a friend rather than something more because he's just not interested in commitment. And throughout the song they are asking themselves if they are wrong to be in the friends-not friends-lovers tango. Well, that's my two cents. Any other ideas?

I think it means that a guy and a girl were best friends for a while. Then got in a fight and don't speak to each other which seems like forever or till they die.one of them (the guy or girl) thinks its better for them to be together because they can't live apart

i must say, i love these interpretations. they all fit so much together. and when i think about it i say, oh... like i never thought of the songs that way. but i did have a feel that this song in particular was about him and a girl being in love. but its a great song. great to the point that i quote it to my girlfriend. haha. she loves fob

The song is about Pete Wentz's friendship/whatever you want to call it with Mikey Way. The song was originally titled "Summer of Like" for a reason.

Doldrums were a general sailor term, and thats why the yo-HO-ho, Whoooo-oohh-ohhh-oh part souns kinda like pirates. So the title is a pun, its the pirate thing, but also "Bang the Drums"
