I think that a part of the interpretation that is missing has to do with the phrase, "I'll be your number one with a bullet" which is probably a proper use of the phrase. It basically means the best or the first, and with a vengance or passion, and it comes from the way songs are listed in Billboards. Being number one is at the top of the charts, while a bullet signifies that the album or single sold better this week than the previous week, indicating it is continously gaining popularity.
This could be part of his dichotomy of wanting to be with her and being her "best" while hating her for using him. Also, "lie in the grass, next to the mausoleum" could be about how he feels like dying for being betrayed so badly (in his mind). And lastly, what I feel hasn't been addressed in full light, is the line "a loaded God complex, cock it and pull it." A God complex is generally referring to an individual's (generally erroneous) belief that they are God or have superhuman abilities or powers (most commonly used when someone believes that have an inherint ability to get away with things or do things that most people can't).
Here, he is probably referring to her attitude of being able to use guys sexually without having to face any consequences, and it's metaphorically used convey that the hurt he feels because of her attitude is like putting a loaded gun up to his head, cocking it, and pulling the trigger. In short, either the fact that she blows him off, or quite possibly the whole relationship (if you can even call it that), is emotionally killing him.

There are many types of complexes. Besides the fact that I don't think that it's at all applicable to this song, you are referring to is an Oedipus Complex.

I think this song is the about a boy who is having an intense reaction to the simple supposedly physical based relationship he is in with this girl. Their chemistry was only supposed to be sexual, and the guy realizes that he is falling for her. In the song, the hook says, "I'm just a notch in your bedpost, but you're just a line in a song." I think it's here that the band is singing about how the girl is totally emotionally detached, and sees the sexual conquest with the guy, as a "notch in her bedpost" and the guy, in retaliation, states that she's "just a line in a song" even though, he knows she more than that to him.

This song is just about the person that you're in love with that doesn't notice you. I was at their concert two days ago and they said that.

I need to set two things straight:
A complex is not always sexual relations between a mother and son, (that's called incest), it can be any number of things. A God Complex is not a type of gun. Sorry but whoever said that was completely wrong. A God Complex is the belief that one is godlike, and thus better than others.
All who said that the song was about sexual relations between two people purely for the sake of sexual relations are correct.

Whoever thought that it was "load a gun complex" obviously isn't a FOB fan, they don't even know the lyrics.

Assuming everyone here is straight and under 18...
You're missing the most telling parts of the song.
Sleeping for the wrong team. Come on, you know what this means, right? You don't want to talk about icky gay stuff.
Watching you from the closet. Again, ew, gay, right? *shaking head*
And last but not least, the original lyrics, "Wishing to be the friction in HIS jeans." So yes, now you can all run screaming into that good night.
The song has a lot of layered meaning. I'm surprised at how many of the posters here don't understand figurative language. Don't they teach anything in public schools nowdays? The most obvious one is, the protagonist has a thing for someone alright, and it's probably not the girl. Or maybe he's got a thing for them both. In any case, you can't ignore the homoerotic content. Even the video... antlers.... the kid's part deer... queer, get it? No, of course you don't.

Um, yes, there are meanings to Fall Out Boy lyrics. And just becasue a band is now mainstream, doesn't mean that they always have been. Trends change, and just because a band is suddenly liked by many people does not mean that they are bullshit. What's bullshit is people who liked a band, then as soon as they get some sort of popularity, they say that they suck and hate them.
Okay, I really doubt that it's about being gay. And the line is "be the friction in YOUR jeans", meaning he wants to be the guy his girl is now with.
Now, I will admit, as much as I love Pete, he's not that good at thinking up new plots. Like many other FOB songs, the surface meaning is a girl and a guy in a disfunctional relationship. It could also be about living up to expectations in general.
As with many Fall Out Boy songs, the meanings mostly lie in the verses. Choruses have the themes, but not much on the detail front.

Wow, so many people only look at the surface. the song has nothing to do with a guy that likes a girl or whatever. I know I'm right because the the writer of the song has explained it many times.
This anonymous person started correctly:
"I think that a part of the interpretation that is missing has to do with the phrase, "I'll be your number one with a bullet" which is probably a proper use of the phrase. It basically means the best or the first, and with a vengance or passion, and it comes from the way songs are listed in Billboards. Being number one is at the top of the charts, while a bullet signifies that the album or single sold better this week than the previous week, indicating it is continously gaining popularity" -----however they went on to talk about some bullshit.
This anonymous person was COMPLETELY right: "The song is about Fall Out Boy trying to live up to what people expected of them before this album was released. "Am I more that you barganed for yet, I've been dying to tell you anything you wanna' hear, cause that's just who I am this week" The above is exactly the right interpretation, Pete Wentz has said it numerous times, and I think he would know, seeing as he was the one who wrote the lyrics." ---the song is about everyone expecting them to get bigger and better. about living up to expectations. and its true Peter Wentz (the lyricist) has explained this many times.
This anonymous person was annoying: "Fall Out Boy's lyrics don't have any relevance to anything because they are written only to be catchy and fit right in with every other mainstream song. But since this singer wears a "trendy" hat, people think that they are something new and groundbreaking. Bullshit." ---just cuz something is popular and catchy does not mean it has no meaning. theyve been around for years, before Sugar and before From Under The Cork Tree. their lyrics have always meant something.
This anonymous person was annoying as well: "In any case, you can't ignore the homoerotic content. Even the video... antlers.... the kid's part deer... queer, get it? No, of course you don't." ---yes, there are things that sound "gay" and the original line was "wishing to be the friction in HIS jeans". but the song was NOTHING to do with being gay. the guys in fall out boy like to act silly and put those little things in there on purpose. they admitted to it. they wanted to sound gay. but the song IS NOT about some kid that's queer. (no offense to anyone that is...and fall out boy isn't making fun of homosexuals either so I hope no one starts ranting about that...)
Okay, I'm done. I was really bored. I have no life.

This is the ACTUAL interpretation...
God complex means when someone believes they are better than everyone else. They pretty much think they're God. And the loaded God complex means the person is at full force.
I'll be your number one with a bullet refers to pop charts, how on the Billboard 100 the number one spot doesn't get a bullet next to it but every other song does. This line pretty much means "I'll be your everything."
The "Am I more than you bargained for yet? I've been dying to tell you anything you want to hear cause that's just who I am this week" part refers to fans. How fans expect so much out of a band and expect them to be a certain way. Pete (the writer) is basically saying that he sometimes feels like he's forced into saying things that you want to hear.
The rest of the song is about a STRAIGHT relationship. Not a homosexual one. The 'watching you two in the closet' is meant to be taken as he's hiding in the closet watching the girl he loves and some guy wishing he could be him.
'Sugar, we're going down swinging' isn't meant to be sexual either. It's meant to be that he's fighting to the death for this girl.

Ok, there's like a million interpretations for this song, but I'll put my 2 cents in just because.
This song is the first one I had heard by Fall Out Boy when I first saw the video. It grew on me and I really got into it, so the Sugar We're Goin Down interpretation is coming easy for me. I'll do the whole song, why not?
"am I more than you bargained for yet?
i been dying to tell you
anything, you wanna hear
cause that's just who I am this week"
^
That, in my opinion, means that this guy would tell this girl anything she wants to hear just so she'll love him too, but that's just the way he's feeling at the moment.
"lie in the grass
next to the mausoleum
i'm just a notch in your bedpost
but you're just a line in a song"
^
He's sitting back and thinking about the situation next to a mausoleum, perhaps thinking about death and hurting. and for the "notch in your bedpost" part, it means that they had slept together and she wrote him off afterwards, but he wants her back. he wants it to seem as if she doesn't mean anything to him anymore, though she means the world.
"drop a heart, break a name
we're always sleeping in, and sleeping, for the wrong team
we're goin down, down in an earlier round
and sugar we're goin down swinging
i'll be your number one with a bullet
a loaded god complex cock it and pull it"
Peterpan switched the words around to mess with our pretty little minds, it should be "drop a name, break a heart" obviously. he's always with the wrong person, for the "we're always sleeping in, and sleeping, for the wrong team" part. he's diving off the wrong end and going down swinging (not literally of course, dur) and he knows it's wrong but he can't quit hurting himself this way. i'm not sure about the loaded god complex part, but the "cock it and pull it" part means to just shoot himself or her, because anyone who saw the video would know that when Patrick and Peter sang that part, the girl's father was about to shoot him.
"is this more than you bargained for yet?
oh, don't mind me
I'm watching you two from the closet
wishing to be the friction in your jeans
isn't it messed up?
how i'm just dying to be him
i'm just a notch in your bedpost
but you're just a line in a song
we're going down, down...
take aim at myself, take back what you said"(background)
^
This is where they're at the point to face up to a decision on what to do. and how he's secretly observing her relationship with another guy and how it's killing him inside. he wants to be her guy, but he can't. I explained the "notch in your bedpost" part earlier. and when he says "take aim at myself, take back what you said" he wants to kill himself over her and he wants her to take back what she said so that everything will return to normal. they're both in so far in the deep end that he can't let her go and clearly he doesn't want to. he loves her and it's killing him inside that she doesn't love him back and that she's with another guy.
Ok, that's my personal take on the whole song (which is my favorite band and song) so anyone crazy enough to read my entire review can email me (KTRocks05@yahoo.com) about your opinions and thoughts because the more I learn about fall out boy, the more I grow to respect and like the band. Thanks for your time people!

Urm, this has been done to death, but I thought I'd voice my opinion anyway.
"Loaded god complex, cock it and pull it" - I kind of thought he was referring to how detrimental having a God complex can be. Thinking you're above everyone else, etc. For instance, if the general consensus of opinion is true, and it's about a guy wanting to be with someone he can't be with, because they're supposed to have a strictly 'no strings' sexually based relationship, then he could be thinking how his arrogance in this situation (thinking he could hack it when he cant) has led to his downfall, and him being in love with the girl.
Reading through, doesn't make sense really, but sending anyway...

I think that this song is about a guy and girl who broke up. I think that he is still in love with her, via the masturbation. You guys are overlooking the line "a loaded god complex cock and pull it" This meaning that she has to live her life the way she wants to and when she feels like she is on top of the world go with it. So he basically realizing that if he loves her he will set her free... even if that means her dating someone else.

I agree with blnt_ with everything. I think this song is about a boy in love with a girl, but that girl has a boy friend and he's stalking her. Hence, the "I'm watching you two from the closet". The "we're always sleeping in and sleeping for the wrong team" means they are sleeping with the wrong people and should be with each other. As someone mentioned the "god complex" is the boy thinking he has the right to kill for what he wants.

Okay, first of all xxmisspiggyxx is a real loser. This song is about a guy and a girl. I really think whoever thinks that is it about gays they is incrediably wrong. I have nothing against gay people, but honestly, in the music video, do they have two gay people? I didn't think so.
It is about this guy (who is totally different from everybody else hence the antlers) and he loves this one girl who had (probably a one night stand), but she likes this other guy so he talks about how he wishes he can be him, or it can be interpreted by the pop charts.
Whoever thought it was about gays and chickens (what a loser) really didn't know what they are talking about and should go listen to some other band that they can at least understand the words!

LMAO. I think xxmisspiggyxx is awesome and that person is hilarious.
But I think it's about a boy and a girl that just use each other for sex. They don't mean anything to each other and they have their own love partners.

I'm just going to through this in here because I'm really surprised nobody has thought of it yet.
"a loaded God complex, cock it and pull it."
My original interpretation of this line is that by God complex, he is talking about a gun. What are guns primarily used for? Killing, taking lives... There are people out their who believe that God is the only one who should take lives. Thus by using a gun, by thinking you have the right to take lives, you have a God complex. The "cock it and pull it," as well as the previous line, "I'll be your number one with a bullet," strengthen this.
I'm not going to say whether this is still what I think the song is about because I really don't want to get into this discussion. I just thought I'd through that out for people to think about.
