'IT'S PAINLESS TO FLOAT ABOVE THE EARTH LIKE THIS' - he's talking about when you sleep the pains and the problems of the world just vanish. Sleep is 'void of nightmares'!

'Insomniac meat oh - I can't shut my eyes
Void of nightmares, leading upstairs
Do I follow? - I can't shut my eyes'

...he is a piece of insomniatic meat (he "poetically" suffers insomnia) so he can't shut his eyes/go to sleep even though upstair is a bedroom which is void of those nightmare in life but knowing that fact he still can't sleep at night.
