Five For Fighting: 100 Years Meaning

100 Years Lyrics

I'm 15 for a moment
Caught in between 10 and 20
And I'm just dreaming
Counting the ways to where you are
I'm 22 for a moment
She feels better than ever
And we're on fire
Making our way back from Mars
15 there's still time for you
Time...

This one was kind of difficult for me to decipher. I concluded that this is about a man who is remembering his life. He is remembering his love life, and the start of his family. I noticed that this song keeps going back to the topic of his lover/wife. He says "15 there's still time for you" saying that he's remembering when the 2 of them still had plenty of time together, and a whole future spread out for them.

This song is the overall reflection of finding your soul mate and the stages of your life with them. As a fifteen year old you have time to decide and date different girls "counting the ways to where you are", as a 22 year old he has found someone and is engaged to her "she feels better than ever" As a 33 year old he is married to the girl "still the man but you see i'm a they" As a 45 year old he is having an affair "The sea is high and I'm heading into a crisis" Then the wife finds out when he is 50 "Half the time goes by Suddenly you're wise" At 67 years old the couple can not stand each other and divorce "67 is gone
The sun is getting high we're moving on" At the end of the mans life he realizes the mistake of divorcing his soul mate and wishes he could be with her just one more moment "I'm 99 for a moment dying for just another moment" His message of the song is that at fifteen you can only wish how your life with your soul mate will turn out even though the reality might not match up "Hey 15, there's never a wish better than this when you only got 100 years to live"

I believe that this song is about how when he was young he wanted to be older and as he got older and went through the pros and cons of life and enjoyed it. He realized that when you are young it seems like forever to grow older but the older you get the faster time flies and he realized that 15 was the best time of his life and he wished to be 15 again. Even though many good things happened in his life like when meet his lover and when he started a family and had kids. He still thinks that 15 was the best time of his life. I also believe that he is saying to enjoy life while it lasts and cherish every moment for each moment is special.

When he's 15 and "caught between 10 and 20," his life is at a midpoint between childhood and adulthood. He finds himself "counting the ways to where you are" with "you" referring to the love of his life that he hopes to find.

At 22, having met this girl, and presumably having spent the night with ("making our way back from mars" alluding to their experience), he is once again looking ahead to their future.

At 33, he has a child on the way, making him a "they" as he has to think about himself and his family.

At 45, he enters a "mid-life crisis," and as he says is chasing the days of his life (possibly his youth, if the idea of a mid-life crisis is accepted).

At 67, the "sun is getting high," a way of representing his life by the passage of the sun over the horizon, and meaning that his time will soon be up.

When 99 arrives, he's once again "counting the ways to where you are," only this time this refers to seeing his (presumably) deceased wife in the next life.

All throughout, he reminisces of the time when he was 15 and dreaming about finding the right girl and making a life for himself, something which remains with him until the end of his 100 years.

From a 60 yr old man's perspective: It's about memories of youthful ideas, ideals and experiences that often diminish with age. Always remembering and hopefully holding onto some of that joyful essence of our youthful spirit for the adventures in life. At each stage of transition, calling upon that spirit to cushion us during trying times of obstacles. From this 60 yr old man's perspective, the song has dramatically focused my attention to my mortality and final chapters. I become saddened and emotional whenever I listen to it. It motivates me to seek joy, love & adventure till my last breath.

I think its an old man reminiscing to a fifteen year old about his life and telling him how he has a lot of time left and he shouldn't be worried about stuff when he's got his whole life ahead of him

This song is a celebration of life. It gives the pros and cons of a life well-lived. The good times are a joy to live, and the struggles make you wiser. The lyrics exemplify the roller coaster of life, at times its amazing and at times its tough, but all roads lead to one destination: the final days when you are "99 for a moment, dying for just another moment and I'm just dreaming, counting the ways to where you are." I interpreted the "you" to be himself at the age of 15. He is perhaps on his death bed, and falls into his final sleep - replaying the best years of his life. It is then when he discovers the very meaning of life. With a smile he concludes: "There's never a wish, better than this: When you've only got a hundred years, to live."

I interpret this song as an old man who is laying, basically, on his death bed and he is remembering his life, how much he loved his soulmate, and how quickly his life went by, and he feels as though he should still be 15 and starting his life.

I think this song was written in a plea to fifteen year olds not to commit suicide because they have their whole lives ahead of them. The lyrics suggest that whatever troubles you may have as a fifteen-year-old, you're on the brink of growing up and 'there's still time' for you to grow and change as a person.

Interpretation based on the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpkqVqZ7PUE)

I think the point their trying to make in this song is that
When your fifteen you still have time (or so it's seems) you have a hundred years or so, so not to worry over the little things, like loseing that first love because you have plenty of time to worry about things and thats not that important, but when your young (fiftenn) it's seems important but as you grow you'll find out that its was a waste of time to worry over it because it wasn't as important as you thought it was.

This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway
