For me, this song is the story of the beginning of my relationship with my husband.
I wasn't necessarily looking for love but, amongst a group of friends, this guy started to stand out from the rest. I was a bit taken aback at first, then mildly amused and, finally, I started hoping to see him every time our group got together.
From hope, my feelings strengthened and I gave into the love that I now felt. For me, the lyrics, '...All the way back, you held out your hand. If I hope and if I pray, oooh, well it might work out someday...' came true...12 years, and a few months, ago! xx :)
