It is about staying alive no matter what shape you're in and how no matter how bad things are they will get better and if you watch the music video you'll see its also about not killing yourself.

My honest opinion is that this song is about pushing people away. People being the boat and the action of sinking the boat is pushing them away because you think you don't need them.
As the opening line talks about drinking away the rest of the day, it sort of makes a point that the person who is singing the song turned to alcohol because he had no friends because he pushed them away. The line that says he is sick and tired of what to say because no one listens anyway says that he doesn't know what to say or do and no matter what he does say, no one listens because they don't care about him anymore. The paragraph that starts of saying, "singled out for who you are, it takes all types to judge a man," says to me that his friends who are now his enemies singled him out for fights because of what they did to him. "It takes all types to judge a man" also says to me that the people he pushed away didn't take him for the type that would push people away when he was going through a rough patch.
"A ripe old age, that's what I am, a ripe old age, just doing the best I can," says to me that the man with no friends is carrying on with life as normally as he can and doing it to the best of his ability despite the fact that he has no friends.
This is just my opinion, if anyone has anything along those lines or something completely different, post it and share with the world your opinion.
God bless you all,
