Flyleaf: Cassie Meaning
Cassie Lyrics
To save her life or take it
The answer "No" to avoid death
The answer "Yes" would make it
Make it
"Do you believe in God?"
Written on the bullet
Say "Yes" to pull the trigger
"Do you believe in God?"

I recently went to a Flyleaf concert in Little Rock and the meaning for "Cassie" was explained. Cassie Bernal was a victim at the Columbine High School Massacre. She was allegedly asked by the shooter if she believed in God and she said yes. She also allegedly didn't die with the first shot and she was asked again if she still believed in God...and she said yes, knowing what was going to happen. This song was dedicated to Cassie and Rachel(another victim) because they stood up for what they believed in.

This song is about Cassie Bernall. For those of you who don't know, this song is directly related to the Columbine Highschool Massacre of April, 1999. When Eric Harris bent to shoot Cassie Bernall, he allegedly asked the question "Do you believe in god?" And when she answered "yes" He shot her.

Recently at a concert, Lacey explained what this song was about. She said that"Cassie" is a song about dying for what you believe in. Named after the girl Cassie from the Colombine shooting, she stood up for what she believed in, and when she was asked if she believed in God, she said yes, and they shot her.

Religious... persecution. That's what this song screamed to me when I listened to it. It seemed really obvious to me, but if anyone has any other ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Yes it is about the Columbine shooting, I think we've established that. I live in Colorado and I think it is so awesome that she wrote about this.

I think flyleaf is an amazing band, but this song out does itsself. I love the fact that they would honor those victims lives with such a great song. It teaches us to stand up for what we beleive in, stand up for your self, and not to be afraid.

I think we've established what this song is about, and you're right, it's really nice to honor people who weren't afraid to say "yes" for what they believe in. This is probably my favorite song out of all of them.

This song is about cassie bernall, who was killed in the columbine shooting. The song is about when she was asked if she believe in god, and she said "yes" , then was shot. She's seen as a martyr for christianity, even though reports and witnesses say that she was never asked the question.
It is a sad song :( -

Daxxiness Sep 22nd 2006, 16:34 report
Well, I went to wikipedia and here's what I read:
.....Official reports state that harris then walked over to the table across from the lower computer row, slapped the top twice with his hand, knelt down, and said "peek-a-boo" before shooting cassie bernall in the head. The recoil from the weapon hit his face, breaking his nose. Although it is popularly believed that bernall was the individual who was asked "do you believe in god?", the official investigation has attributed this remark not to bernall but to a surviving student, valeen schnurr (see below). Three students who witnessed bernall's death, including the person who was hiding under the table with her, have testified the exchange did not occur.[16] nevertheless, others who were in the library asserted the exchange occurred, though none of these students physically witnessed it. They may instead have heard the later exchange between klebold and schnurr and been misled by news reports attributing the words to bernall. This misunderstanding sparked much debate as to whether the official investigation thoroughly assessed all possibilities.....
And this...........Harris, in the meantime, went over to another table where two girls were hiding, bent down and looked at them, and dismissed them as "pathetic". The pair then went over to an empty table and began to reload their weapons. Schnurr, who had been hurt badly, began to cry out at that point, "oh, god help me!" klebold went back to her and asked her if she believed in god. She floundered in her answer, saying no and then yes, trying to get the answer "right". He asked her why; she said it was because it was what her family believed. He taunted her then walked away. This incident eventually led to the cassie bernall controversy, as some believe the eyewitnesses who continue to back the bernall claim may have wrongfully attributed the schnurr/klebold remark to bernall due to possible similarlities in voice and appearance.....
So, it appears that cassie wasn't the one who was asked the question, "do you believe in god?"
although, the song really is about cassie. It's still about standing up for what you believe in, but cassie wasn't the one.
At least that's what I concluded from what I read. -

I think this song is amazing. Whether or not cassie died due to the fact that she believed in god, this song opens the window to the fact that people do die just for what they believe in.
Flyleaf has lyrics that I can relate to and I'm sure everyone else can too. -
brokenenterprises Oct 18th 2006, 13:36 report
Okay so it still reamians a question whether or not cassie said that she belived in god, whatever I think that the real statement is made at the end of the song. She repeats that many more will die, and that she will die if asked that question. A strong statement of her faith I think.

Cassie Bernall and Rachel were students who were shot in the columbine incident. When the shooter went to Rachel, he asked "do you believe in god?" she said yes and he shot her. She died. Then he looked upon Cassie. "do you believe in god?" she replied yes. He shot her, and stooped over her wounded body. "do you believe in god?" he asked again. She said yes and he killed Cassie.

Yes, it is about the shooting.
i have read both she said yes, and rachel's tears.
Rachel is the one who was asked directly if she believed in God, and was shot in the head, after being shot in the back, and tried to get away.
Cassie was in the library, and they were all under tables.
They said, if anyone believes in God, stand up now.
She proudly stood up, and was shot in the forehead.
this song is amazing.
i had no idea what it was about until I listened to it...
i then started making the connection.
and I thought it was soooo awesome that this kind of band made this kind of song.
veryyyy impowering. -

I also agree that Daxxiness is the only one right, but I think we're missing the point here. Whether the basis of the song is in some small sense false, it's all about how WE the listeners hear and interpret it for ourselves. Whatever we think the song means, no matter how many different opinions, it's about how we as individuals enjoy the music.

It's obviously about Columbine in 99 and dying for your faith. And the story of Cassie Bernall, and Rachel Joy Scott.

Yes, it is about the columbine shooting. Unfortunately we'll never know if Cassie was one of the ones who was directly asked if she believed in God. Wikipedia is not that reliable, since viewers can change it. The point of the song still gets across though, and the meaning is standing up for your faith. Simple.

Ok well for starters that statement from the guy above, beavisface, I think it is, is ridiculous. "Have respect for the killers and don't dog them" are you nuts? these assholes had problems like EVERY OTHER PERSON in the world but the only difference is they were big girls about their problems and thought shooting peoples faces off was the answer. I have absolutely NOOOO respect and NO sympathy for them. If I ever saw their grave I'd piss and spit on it! oh yeah the songs about Cassie, who cares if she was asked the question or not, none of us were there so we'll never actually know. So stop acting like you do!

This song is not only about Cassie Bernall but just about believers in general. Its like are we going to step up to the plate and proclaim our love in God? Or are we just going to sit back and be closet believers? Cassie was willing to proclaim it. And for that she has a special place in heaven.
