This song was startlingly clear to me the moment I heard it. It's about getting used/abused by anyone who you've put your trust in. How you get weary of being let down and hurt and having to get over it "I'm getting tired of starting again somewhere new..."
I think it's basically a song expressing the pain of being let down and also having the nerve to stand up to the people who have done it "Were you born to resist or be abused?"

The Best of You is about a guy who broke up with a girl and can't help but wonder why he can't be the one for her. He wonders about who she's with and if they ever made her happy. He then realizes that he has to move on and finally sees passed her.

I think that this song can have two different interpretations. The most obvious being that from the perceptive of loss, the least obvious one is the people in your day to day life truly getting the best of you? Do your friends and lovers know how much you truly care? Do you make an effort? Or are you the type that once you experience the heartache of loss everything else loses meaning? But then again thats just my two cents.

Well, I thought at first that the song referred to a break up. The guy was very upset by the break up, and was questioning the new man in the ex girlfriend's life, whether he was getting the 'best' of her. 'Best' meaning the good bits that he just couldn't appreciate at the time.
The more I have thought about it though, it seems as though he may have meant the song in a sarcastic way, and was talking about someone getting the 'best' of you meaning that they are taking advantage of you. I'm from Australia, and when someone 'gets the best of you,' it means they really irritate you or get under your skin, they really annoy you. So, the song could possibly be the personification of love-hate relationships, where he ultimately feels a lot for her, but is constantly in conflict with her. He feels as though he should either 'resist' the attempt at love, or be 'abused' as the natural consequence of loving someone for him, has resulted in feeling abused ( a broken heart etc).
The fact that he laments at the end that he can't be bothered trying anymore suggests that despite his attempts to stand strong and not go for another girl, he does it anyways, and lives to regret it, as his heart gets weaker every time. its a song that can be seen from a few points of view, an angry ex crying out to the wind, or a man who is getting older, and is realising that his 'best' may well be gone, and he is old and beaten by life, or then again, it could be a song meaning that is angry that someone took the 'best' that he had to offer, and abused it, and he is questioning whether or not somone has done that, or is doing that to her (abusing her and taking the 'best' she has to offer, such as trust, faith, love etc, all the things that he has lost). Well, that's my 5 cents. :)

I think this song is about moving on from any situation where you've become close to someone... a relationship,friendship,whatever... The feelings you have about that person being "gone & onto someone new" who is getting "the best" of that person that was previously only for you... it breaks your heart. but at the same time you know you need to move on from that person because they are holding you back or repressing you

I think the name of the album says it all:
IN YOUR HONOR
i have it believed this song has to do with Friendship Dave had with Kurt:
~"You gave me something that I didn't have"~
Its been reported that Dave suffered a deep serious depression after Kurts Death. I believe the whole album has to do with the memory of Kurt and how David is "...getting tired of starting again..." and swears "[to never give in..." again to his depression and "refuse[s]" to let the depression get the "Best" of him and only keep alive all the good
i also have to agree with the opinions of all the other interpeters truely 100% so if there is anyone outthere who doesn't completely agree with me, please refer to the others before me
Let a Prophets will be done...

If you've ever been in love, this song is for you.
I think it's about loving someone so much it hurts. Think about someone you couldn't stop thinking about. It fills you with hope and with fear.
It brings you so much joy thinking you may be with this person, but that fear of rejection or loss plays a major roll too.
I'm not going to cite any of the lyrics, but I will point to the kick ass music video. Look at the images that show the extremes of what is good and harsh in life. Birth, death, sex and loss is all in there and whoever is on his mind is taking him to the extremes of both good and bad.

I'm quite sure I've read dave say something along the lines of when he writes songs he leaves them quite open for interpretation for everyone to be able to use the song for themselves in their own way...
Best of you however I'm almost positive he said that he did not write it as some sort of 'love' song as such and was aiming it more at politics and being stuck in something and struggling and you can't do anything about it because of the restraints of politics... (note all the
he also said that the new album was influenced by the current us government - but didn't want to be so "extreme" as green day was.
But generally everyone has their own interpretations of each song which is why foo songs are so good so everyone can relate their own situations to them.
But of course... Everyone sees it as a song about a relationship between two people probably gone wrong... As I did

I think this song, for everyone, can have very different meanings, all depending on what you're going through in your life.
To me, right now, it has two meanings.
1) it could mean that someone is getting the best of someone they used to (or even possibly are still with) and they want to know if they are cheating. Saying he is sick of starting over, meaning he doesn't want to get into another relationship and start fresh, getting to know someone and all.
2) asking if someone is holding back the person you want to get involved with. Asking if someone is getting the best of that person from things an old lover had done in the past. Seeing if the one you are now in love with is still holding on to old feelings and let downs from a previous relationship. Meaning that they are still "getting the best of" them by their past hurts still lingering around.
I dunno, that's just my thoughts.

okay well before I saw the video I thought that it was about a guy kinda professing his love for this girl who has had her heartbroken a lot, but then I saw the video. In the video they have a lot of clips of people basically having sex. and then I thought "hey 'best of you=virginity'?"
i know it's stupid but no one had said anything about.

" 'Best of You' is a song of resistance. It's about the refusal to be taken advantage of by something that's bigger than you, or someone you're in love with. It's the fight in the face of adversity," Grohl said. "I didn't really think of an interesting melody; I just wanted to scream the whole way through. And the first few times we rehearsed it, I thought, 'There's no way I'll be able to play this live. There's blood in my throat.' But now it's great, it's a release. When you go out and sing words from the heart, you scream twice as hard."

Well I believe that personally Dave Grohl left it for people to think what they want deliberately
But I believe it is wrote about Kurt Cobain because of all the shit about his faith and confessing shit
He actually at one point was against drugs and heroin and shit and ended up a druggy himself. Someone took his faith against drugs away.
Cobain was also confessing that he would commit suicide at one point.
Dave Grohl also has a part of the song dedicated to himself too. "I'm getting tired of starting again" think of how many bands and shit Dave Grohl has had to move between for ages. He may just be getting frustrated of starting again with a different band all the time

Well in my own opinion when I first heard the song I thought it was about being with someone you didn't really take notice of, you didn't give them the care and attention they needed, now they're gone you realised they've moved on to someone else who is getting the best of them.
Another thing I feel it could be about that you really cared about this person but you split up and they moved onto some new but they are abusing them, and you can't help them because they won't leave the guy and so you try but it doesn't help.
Also the first few verses could be about Kurt Cobain, when he says "You gave me something that I can't have," because he's gone.

I feel that this song is about the artist in his own life and how people are constantly getting the best of him, meaning they were taking advantage of him, and it was killing him (I needed somewhere to hang my head without your noose.) Finally, he "grew some stones," so to speak, and broke the chains holding his heart and his passion prisoner. Whether the person or people taking advantage of him is a girl or family or friends or fans I'm not sure, but I think this song is saying someone was making him feel a prisoner in his emotions and he finally broke free from that prison.

I was in the situation of the song so I know what it's about
It's about a man who, at te beginning can't get over this girl, but her new boyfriend is taking advantage of her, getting the best of her. At the end he realizes she was manipulating him, and gets over her

I've always felt the song was about the fear of losing the ability to identify your own emotions as genuine or manufactured - the numbness that comes from time and a battle weary heart.
The song (confession) is to himself. He's yelling at himself, through the pain of tired bitterness and self loathing (abuse). He's trying to shock his heart into feeling new again. It's pretty powerful stuff.

I think this is about depression or anger or some other mental problem along the lines
Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
You trust, you must

This song is not about kurt
Really go on you tube and look it up. Dave Grohl talks about Kurt in the box it will tell you everything...
But anyways this song to me is about a relationship that keeps going bad and its starts again again all the time and is never really in a good place because the girl or guy is always getting taken advantage of the person tries their hardest to satisfy him or her but never gets anything in return or she later forgets about it.
This song is quite sad... I also the tone of his voice is angry hurt and almost pleading to this person and when dave says is someone getting the best of you?
I think he is just basically saying I'm giving my best to you why can't you give your best to me?

The song encourages everyone to give their best to someone even if they have been hurt in the past...they should not let that affect their future relationships by losing faith ...the mid verse
''I needed somewhere to hang my head
Without your noose
You gave me something that I didn’t have
But had no use
I was too weak to give in
Too strong to lose
My heart is under arrest again
But I break loose
My head is giving me life or death
But I can’t choose
I swear I’ll never give in
No, I refuse''
...describes the hurt and eventual conclusion of not letting it damage them emotionally...and this one
'' I've got another confession my friend
I’m no fool
I’m getting tired of starting again
Somewhere new''
...describes his decision to settle with one person to whom he/she have decided to give their best to.

Confession,
I have never been a huge Foo fan but alas great music is the strongest weakness of my soul. Recently I have listened to a song named “best of you” by the Foo. There was a time not too far in the recent past that I felt like this applied from myself to the love of my life. The shallow mentality of ones self was that, I am the strong that resisted and not abused. By being strong I would set the example for others in my life. Mercifulness did not become me, no patience for the wrong or confused, live and consume or die and be consumed, no peace for the “weak”. Then enters “best of you” and suddenly I was not the dedicating but the dedicatee. I pictured that this song was the sum of the feeling of a person that in the ultimate ending of us was trying to get me to understand. That they needed a place to hang there head but only found a noose. That gave me something that I didn’t have, unconditional love and in return I gave them something that they could not use, sorrow. The pitiful illusion of sanity that I lived in at the time… how arrogant of one. Only the weak have no since of compassion and that is only true to my eyes now having traveled the road of loses. Eternal regret of what I was and did to the person that loved. To see the clarity of humanity now has coast me a love lost forever. To this I swear to the love lost, no matter of what creed, race, religion, or belief there will always be a place of comfort, to hang your head without judgment or discrimination, May I always have the strength to offer you shelter from the storm, and to wisdom to keep the fire alight to guide you threw the angriest of seas. Never again shall I turn a cold shoulder to those in need. Something that I needed to show to you without the sight to judge, Thank you Foo Fighters! I am not thanking God, Allah, Buddha, or any other supreme divinities for this new insight of humanity. I thank you.

Ok I am just going to say this; this song and 99% of all other songs aren't to do with freaking Kurt Cobain. I mean sure when he killed himself obviously Grohl was saddened but for EVERY song to be about Kurt would be really obsessive, and besides, they were never to the point of being best friends. That was Kurt and Novaselic.
