The 'Long Road' is a reference to life itself. When he says 'long road to ruin' he is saying that life is something that is a very 'long' thing to ruin completly. He is basically saying that life is hard to stuff up completly, because eventually you'll get to a point in the 'road' (life) and realise that you have moved on from something that has burdened you for ages or realise that the boundaries that you thought were holding you back don't even exsist. It is a very positing and I love it.
