This song is about people and how they can hit rock bottom. Doing things that they may not usually do unless they were desperate or in the same ballpark. The "screws inside turned so tight" means that something in the persons life has just pushed them over the edge and, "taking it as low as you go" the most important part,talks about not being alone when hitting the bottom. How nobody wants to do things alone because they want someone to feel what they are feeling. To get a better understanding just watch this songs music video. Its got Jack Black in it.
