   I think this guy has treated people (women) poorly and disregards their feelings in the past. Uses them for one night stands. But he regrets it now because it's almost like karma when he finally meets someone he cares about and needs she leaves.    I think that the song means, he got a call, which might be a break-up call, and this call reminds him of a similar feeling he got when a car accident happened in the past..., in general a feeling of "loosing someone"

   I think in the beggining,
   " I got the call soon as the day hit night.
   As soon as the headlights lit up the Westside.
   I stopped the car and came outside

   I remember the first time
   we wished upon parallel lines.
   Waiting for a friend to call
   and say they're still alive.
   I've given everyone I know
   a good reason to go.
   I was surprised you stuck around
   long enough to figure out"
   
   Basically refers to someone getting into a car accidents, someone he obviously cared for and they 'stuck around' unlike other people who have just walk out of his life.
   
   Then by the end of the song,
   " And I know, know, know
   You've fallen from the sun.
   Crashing through the clouds.
   I see you burning out.
   And I know, know, know
   that I put up a front
   But maybe, just this once,
   let me keep this one."
   
   Maybe symbolizing his friends is reaching the end (I see you burning out)
   
   and he is pleading (let me keep this one.) for his friends life, because this person means alot, this person didn't give up on him or leave.
   
   The chorus seems very saracastic and sollum.
   
   " Yeah, it's all alright.
   I guess it's all alright.
   I got nothing left inside of my chest,
   but it's all alright."
   
   saying, it's fine, I've lost everything but that's alright!
   
   and then,
   " I never claimed to be more than a one-night stand
   I've given everyone I know
   a good reason to go.
   But I came back with the belief
   that everyone I love is gonna leave me"
   
   (I've never claimed to be more than a one night stand) makes me believe this "friend" was a love interest, then (i came back with the belief that everyone I love is gonna leave me) He has trust issues.    Honestly, the lyrics "wishing on parallel lines" sounds, to me, like 9/11. He's hoping that his friend will call to say they're still alive after the attack.

   He was driving in in the city at dusk when he recieved a call. He could tell by the tone what it was about (a friend of his has been involved in am accident). He pulled the car over. Wishing on parallel lines is literal. Hes on a road wishing for his friend to not be dead. He wants him to call to say that he isnt dead.
