This song is about a casual relationship. The singer or guy wants to commit but the girl won't allow it.
"You and I got somethin' but it's all and then it's nothin' to me." Shows how the relationship is off and on. The guy cares about the girl but backs off because he's hurt by her rejection.
"I got my defenses when it comes to your intentions for me" Is the guy basically saying he doesn't want to be used.
"And we wake up in the breakdown of the things we never thought we could be " - Both parties got into in believing that they could keep it casual and nobody would want more. But now they have ended up the same way everybody else does.
"I'm not the one who broke you, I'm not the one you should fear. We got to move you, darlin' " - The guy believes the girl can't commit because she has been hurt and is stuck in the past.
"And I want to get free, talk to me
I can feel you fallin' and
I wanted to be all you need
Somehow here is gone " - Guy wanted to help and be her everything but feels she is a lost cause.
"I am no solution to the sound of this pollution in me. And I was not the answer so forget you ever thought it was me." - Guy has realised that allthough he loves her she's bad news and he has not been helping himself by sticking around for so long. He decides to break it off.
"And I don't need the fallout of all the past that's in between us. And I'm not holdin' on. And all your lies weren't enough to keep me here" - Girl demands to know why he has had the sudden change of heart. Guy doesn't want to argue about the past but says its because of her lies.
Just speculating here but I think the girl lied about having a bad past as an excuse not to commit. The guy was mad because he only stuck around because he believed she could be helped and they could eventually be together.
Here is gone means the oppourtunity has gone. Even though he wanted those things then she can't have them now.

Actually, the one above is pretty close. the lead singer (john rzeznik) was going through a divorce when he wrote this song. it's about how you think everything was supposed to be ("you and I got something") but then, after awhile, it just crumbles ("but then it's all and then it's nothing to me"). I think the divorce's motive was johnny's music ("I am no solution to the sound of this pollution in me"). the music video has another meaning to it. the music video is about a bunch of out-cast kids who are going to abandon everything, including loved ones to try and make it on their own because they feel as if everyone has changed and they don't belong. the song technically IS about change in a relationship and hoping after years of separation, you can come back to that person, but for now, things are as they are now.

This song is about having a relationship with someone that maybe took an unexpected turn and they wanted more out of it than you did, or you simply realized that they were using you to fill in the cracks someone else had made on them and how you are telling them you are not going to do that. The person singing the song is clearly rejecting the other person who may have thought they were the one who was in control of the situation. and no he is not saying "I wanted to be" he is saying "I won't tempt to be" sounds the same but quite the opposite don't ya think! he is finally seeing the light on a person who he had obviously misjudged in a relationship and is walking away.
