This song is about being stoned/high/jaded, but I heard from a friend that it was about evolution (hence "always go forward going strait will get you nowhere")

I've heard that this song is about being high or stoned or whatever. I also heard that Billie Joe was high in the video for the song, to keep with the feeling of the song.

I must agree with both of you. It is about getting high or stoned. But a final question; why is Mike at the back of all the photos of the band?
