This song is about a person who gets pleasure out of seeing others in pain. Billie Joe wrote this about a magazine writer who trashed them after Dookie came out, during Kerplunk! He loved them they we’re and would always be the best no matter what…but then he acted like an asshole, Billie decided to release on nimrod instead of insomniac because he felt it show him they’ve grown…but he died before the album came out. This song is about hating someone incredibly (this is about a reporter who thrashed Dookie but he was a big fan of KERPLUNK!)The song leads from a Billies opinions to a stream of insults (dick head, fuck face, cock smoking, mother fucking, asshole, dirty twat, waste of semen, I hope you die)to his feelings of hate.

This song can be understood by just reading the lyrics. Its about the fan of kerplunk that had turned, and Billie just wrote how he hates the guy now. and he got "platypus" because billy once said that he wanted to name a song after the odd animal, so he chose this song.

It's about a guy who liked the album KERPLUNK but totally thrashed DOOKIE and so BILLIE JOE just wrote a song about how he really really hates this guy I would too...... and he wanted to name a song after the animal.
