   This song is about growing older and realizing that all the youthful optimism you had was total BS. You start out with unrealistically high expectations about what you are going to accomplish, who you are going to date or marry, how much money you are going to have, how much respect you are going to have, how much of a difference your going to make, etc. Then you just continue being mediocre and realize one day that life has passed you by and your still nothing special and now realize you never will be.

   This song is about what Billie Joe doesn't want to grow up and be like. It is also said that Billie wrote this song after he had a fight with Adrienne.
   AND/OR....
