The girl he sees on the subway with another man is his ex girlfriend. She's beautiful!! They exchange stares but do not speak...... Apparently the way it turns out (bless his heart) she dumped him b/c he had a drug problem. If you've heard the unedited version you'll hear "she could tell by my face that I was fucking high!!!" so let me back up now in the beginning he says he seen her w/ another man but he won't lose no sleep on that b/c he's got a plan.......... Right he's just gna commit suicide.......... Deep shit huh? Okay so in tha video he's freezing standin in the snow by a cliff where he takes off all his clothes takes everything out of his pockets and jumps off the cliff. He'd rather die than not have his beautiful girl!!

I saw him on Oprah and he explained that the song was written about his ex-girlfriend. He saw her in the London subway after they broke up and she was seeing someone else.

Maybe not so much suicide...but just cleansing...water represents purity and cleansing and rebirth according to archetypes. Maybe he's just using the whole song to explain her then at the end he jumps into the water to be reborn....haha that's my thoughts anyway

Many of James Blunt's songs relate to drugs. one is pretty flat out and is called "High", on the cover of his cd there is some sort of pill. Also, my favorite line in the song is "she could see from my face that I was f***ing high"

And the end where he sez "but its time to face the truth... I will never be with you.." -- suicide??

His emptying his pockets and taking off his clothes before jumping into the water - that's actually a suicide thing. People take off their shoes, fold their clothes neatly, and leave all their belongings in a pile on a bridge then jump off. Leaving all that stuff & the wallet with ID is like the lazy dude's version of a suicide letter.

His song doesn't make sense to me, it says in the first or second verse. "I have a plan" Then in the chorus he says "And I don't know what to do" But if he had a plan then shouldn't he KNOW what he is going to do???

Please help on this???

Oh and I am liking the suicide theory, it would fit.

Um, yeah, Anonymous, the guy's a drug addict. They can't keep their minds on any one task for very long most of the time. As for this girl of his, if he loved her so much, why didn't he treat her better, for Christ's sakes? I know too many loser drug-addict assholes who apologize for their misbehavior by saying, "But I was high" and then repeating the same mistake again. That's why when someone does that to me, I just don't talk to them or date them again.

One of my favorites from Blunt's new album "All The Lost Souls".

For me, this song is about the end of a relationship - breaking up and moving on. It's the "last dance" and "last goodbye". The "silence" that "greets the last goodbye" represents the inability to find the right words to say (“the words I need”). The truth, however, is reflected in the eyes (“I see it in your eyes”) - the proverbial window to the soul… indicating the other person both “sees” and recognizes that it’s time to let go. However, that the first line is a question "Is it our last dance?" reveals an uncertainty.

These failed relationships have left behind a drop of cynicism for love and romance – “same old moves” and “same old lies” can be used to start a “new romance” but these lines suggest the “same old” ending will result.

The “they" in the chorus refer to the fleeting promises of everlasting love; when you “close your eyes, they’ll all be gone”, unable to stand the test of time. The promises of love were “sold out” – deceived, broken and unfulfilled. The “screaming and shouting” reveal the pain of broken promises.

The promise of eternal love is like god – something revered and believed in but intangible and perhaps on a pedestal so high that it is unreachable. But promises serve this purpose without choice (as “slaves”).

The chorus…”keep shining/keep smiling” is a message to move on and to keep on loving. The line “shine on” suggests illumination, light, clarity and the imagery of the sun brings warmth - both embody what it’s like to have love in your life. “You and I just shone”, you and I just loved.

Even though relationships sometimes don’t work out, it’s never a waste of time because it gives us “a cloud to dance on” and brings us closer to that seemingly unreachable “god” in the sky – a love that will last forever.

It's basically about how he fell in love with a lady who he saw on the subway and she was with someone else. He thought she was beautiful, but he knew he'd never be with her. It's based on his ex who I guess he still liked but he saw she moved on to another guy already. He difinantly commited suicide in the video. I assume that's his "plan".
