I agree with no. 2, but all of you have given good interpretations.

I'd like to add one more to the list.

I think it's about either breaking a relationship or telling the truth to someone when you know they won't like it.
"let me apologise to begin with,
let me apologise for what I'm about to say"
It's about someone who's always had something to say to the other person in the relationship, yet not bben able to say it. Everyone must have someone like this; someone who they need to speak to an spend ages thinking up what they want to say, get their feelings out in the open, yet whenever you're together the other person just somehow smothers those words, whether they be 'i love you' or 'i need your help' or 'i hate you', etc. Just by that person's presence all you say is very ambiguous and you become tongue tied.
"But trying to be genuine was harder than it seemed
But somehow I got caught up in between...
...The things I want to say to you get lost before they come, the only thing that's worse than one is none...
... and I cannot explain to you
n anything I say or do or plan..."

Then this song is about after the relationship, however long that may be, and coming to terms with your real emotions and what you've done.
"But trying to be someone else was harder than it seemed"
It seems as though this person has been living with this burden for a long time then something they've done has shocked everyone and now they are trying to explain.
"between the lies and how the thruth got in the way...
...I hope the actions speak the words they can."

It might just be my spin on it because of my experiences but I think it's a good explanation.

I would like to add that I think the last few lines of the song, "The only thing that's worse than one is none.", is speaking about apologizing. It's better to apologize once than never to at all.

This may be way out there, but this is the story line I attribute to this song:

He was trying to be something/someone he knew she needed him to be in order to form a relationship with her. The whole time, even though he wanted to believe he could really become that person, a piece of him knew that he was faking to some extent. In order to be with her, he continued, and lies piled up. The lines between his lies and the truth got blurry.

Then, he realized he just couldn't be that person. He had broken his promises (perhaps in a religious sense, or perhaps referring to some addiction), but because of his pride, he blamed it all on her. Guilt's a language she can understand - again possibly because of her religion, or possibly because in the past she would lay guilt trips on him. Underneath it all, though, he feels guilty on his own about the way everything transpired. Fear is not afraid of her - she fears God, has feared him at times, and is no stranger to the word.

The only thing that's worse than one is none = when you've not only let everyone else down, but you've let yourself down as well. When you can't even look at yourself in the mirror.

He doesn't know why he says or does the things he says or does that make it seem like he just doesn't care, but underneath, he really, really does. He just feels so bad about everything he has done and said and the ways in which he has let her down that he can't find the words, perhaps doesn't feel worthy of the words. He is admitting that he deceived her in the past, even though not even he realized that completely at the time, and it's all a big mess now, he knows he's broken her heart, but he's sorry, and he wishes he could make it right.
