Linkin Park: In The End Meaning

Song Released: 2001

In The End Lyrics

(It starts with one)
One thing I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try keep that in mind
I designed this rhyme to explain in due time

(All I know)
Time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings...

This song is about not wasting your time by the clock or anyone or anything and start living in this moment....which is the only thing that matters(portrayed by almost every religion). "I tried so hard and got so far but in the end it doesn't even matter" what he means by that is what matters most is the journey, not the destination. But this moment right now, right here is what matters because that's where everything is taking place and that's all that exsists. And it is what's creating the journey. So no matter how hard you try even when you're an Olympian and win a gold medal after those moments of you obtaining the medal it doesn't even matter....this moment is what always matters and we obtain happiness from the journey not the destination. Watch the movie Peaceful Warrior everybody please. Thank you.

I actually think that this song has multiple meanings. Some say that it is about a failed relationship, while others suggest a last-call suicide note. Both suggestions fit well with the lyrics, with evidence on each side. In Verse (II), [he] sings "Despite the way you were mocking me / Acting like I was part of your property / Remembering all the times you fought with me / I'm surprised it got so far / . . . . You wouldn't even recognize me anymore / Not that you knew me back then/. In my eyes and ears, it seems like [he] is explaining possible issues with a relationship. But also throughout the song, his choruses, can be seen as a last resort way of ending everything-- suicide. If someone talks about "trying so hard" or "in the end it doesn't even matter" then it seems like someone is giving up hope because, literally, in the end, it won't matter because I will be dead. This song probably has 2 levels of meaning too it. If not these two ^ then what else is it?

    Fantastic Song, of course.

I believe this song is about no matter how far we get in life, how rich or famous we get, in the end,(when your dead), none of it matters.

It's about Chester's drug addiction when his parents divorced when he was 11. It talks about how he tried to stop this addiction, but he just couldn't.

It's a great song with good meaning to it.
It talks about not waisting your time on things you dont want to do, for example (not mentioned in the song)
If you have a job and you hate it, go out there and get a job that you can enjoy doing, there's always a job that's made for you out there, you just have to find it.
This song actualy helped me wake up and focus on my priorities.
I hope it does te same for all of you.

    nice interpretations everyone.

but my input is it's about someone who was with someone they loved. they truly loved, they weren't necessarily labeled together because the other one wouldn't reveal they loved them even if they did.

you tried so hard. you got so far. you took a fall for this person to try and spend the rest of your life with them then one day they got up and walked out. no reason, no nothing.
being with someone and not being able to tell them you love them because they won't say it to you is fucked up then when they walk away. that fall you took to try and be with them ended up killing you inside. but guess what it doesn't matter anymore now. you got so far for nothing at all. without even realising how much time you spent trying to be with them.

what it meant to me will eventually be a memory; and it doesn't even matter.

The only reason I write this interpretation is because a very good interpreter had a low rating on their very accurate interpretation. What the writer of the song is trying to say is that you should take life easy. Don't worry yourself with problems, because it won't matter when you're dead. Nothing will matter. No matter how rich you become, no matter how famous you are, whether you live in luxury or poverty, what you DID doesn't matter. So at least try to make life worthwhile. Take IT easy.

to me its just a song about a person who worked hard to build a relationship a buisness or whatever it was that it was so important to them that when they failed they were frustrated and wanted to give up.

It doesn't matter what you do if you don't succeed. silver medals don't matter. Your entire life's work has been in vain and it desn't even matter.

It is about putting your trust in someone and them failing you. You have pushed and done as much as you can to live your life and to fix all that you've broken inside and you just finaly give up because you know you can't do it on your own.

When i first listened to this song i thought of it as the feelings and things that happen in my life. My interpretation is a relationship between a kid and a parent(in my case mother) "ive put my trust in you/ but in the end it doesnt even matter" the kid trusted their parent but in the end all the trust is gone and it doesnt even matter. When the kid lost it all he/she "had to fall" . "Trying to hold on but didnt even know wastes it all just to watch you go" and in the end their relationship "doesnt even matter". This is just my interpretation

Love, hate and fear. In the end, it doesn't even matter. Look at the bright side of the world waiting for you.

This song is about moving on when some guys or gals dump you around the corner. Life goes on. Its not the end of the world. Give more love to someone who cares and love you more than you do. Takes you for what you are and you mean everything to them.

I think the song is about dead and how people try to dodge it...mike verses are like if he were the death talking to somebody

The song writer puts in words an interpretation of events as he sees them in his life and the have meaning to them. Once the words are put to music and performed then it takes on a life of it's own and mean many things to many people.

To me the lyrics are a story of life and death possibly of the authors own but also of others. There is a hint of being bullied in earlier life and saying look at me now I am not that person any more. Being mocked and being treated like a piece of property but in the end (now) it doesn't really matter possibly because he has moved on to better things.

Some verses reflect failed relationships or unrequited love for another possibly parental.

"all I know is time is a valuable thing, watch it fly by as the pendulum swings. Watch it count down to the end of the day. The clock ticks life away" This verse could relate to watching someone close dying.

But crucially at the beginning he says "..Keep that in mind i designed this rhyme to explain in due time" which infers he is the one who is dying and this rhyme explains it all.

A well written song that will last as all well written songs do.

in the beginning he talks about time, and how it's crazy that it's finite, and how it's also crazy that as time goes on, your memory of the previous "time" disappears, and thus, that time/reality also disappears. this is the first verse.

throughout the rest of the song, he talks about some girl and how he had problems with her etc. but he also says how although he had those problems and failed, in the end, it didn't matter (because ultimately, your memory of time fades)

    consider two things:
    1) in the beginning, he says that it doesn't matter how hard you try(because time will erase that memory/reality), and to keep that in mind, because he'll explain all he knows... and then proceeds to talk abou time
    2) the name of the song is in the end, which kinda supports my interpretation that the meaning is that in the end things won't matter because time will erase your memory of them

You are going to fight about little things and hold grugdes for long amounts of time, but in the end that doesn't matter compaired to what you are going to do throughout your whole life.

This song is about what we all d and reach in our life, but "in the end" it will all be for nothing as we all pass away some day....."Vanitas,Memento Mori"...
But we should always live our life to the fullest and enjoy every moment of it, not wasting our time "watching the clock tick life away"..--> "Carpe Diem"

    Though an epic song
    WADDUUUPP? haha xD

My song is "In The End" by Linkin Park and I believe that it is about a man who has a very tough job and and has a lot expected out of him at work. The verse:"It doesn't even matter how hard you try,"(2)helps support this by showing that his boss gives him some very hard tasks that need to be completed and he just cant muster out a way to complete the task he was given. The chorus proves that he also failed at the tasks that he was given by saying:"But in the end, It doesn't even matter,"(20-21). The second verse brings a more intense man that is thought to sort of a slave to whoever he is working for and his tasks are endless. The verse that proves this is "Acting like I was part of your Property," (32). Verse three puts an end to the song by having the boss of this man come on to sing and saying how he expected so much and got so little out of this man. A verse that proves this would be "Ive put my trust in you," (49). This song is very powerful in the way that it shows how so many people are expected to do so much from a lot of people that sometimes all they get is very little back out of it. I believe this because a lot of people are fired for things that they can't complete because they don't have the time or resources to complete the project.

part of the song that makes everyone think that it is about a ex-girlfriend and their broken up relationship can mean more that you might think : "In spite of the way you were mocking me Acting like I was part of your property Remembering all the times you fought with me I’m surprised it got so (far)Things aren’t the way they were before You wouldn’t even recognize me anymore Not that you knew me back then" It really doesn't have to be about a relationship.

Some of you are talking about a possible "suicide" meaning of this song. And it's wrong by far.
It seems to be obious that the meaning of the song is a long and beautiful relationship that a girl end with the protagonist of that history.
I say that it can't be a suicide thing cause in some verses of the song you can read future verbs like "What it meant to me will eventually be a memory of a time when I tried so hard" so "it all fell apart" our relationship is over and i'll just can kept it as a memory.
If he's going to have a memory of that in a future it's cause he'll be still alive.

And obious, the relationship was so important for him cause he tried it so hard
    and got so far...

Srry about my horrible english xd i'm spanish and i don't use to write in this language :S

Its so dumb how people can limit their thinking to a relationship between people. My interpretation is that "in the end it doesn't even matter" how long it took for the earth to sustain itself because we human beings are upto destroying it anyway. "Despite the way you were mocking me/Acting like i was part of your property" when u were destroying my forests just because of your greed."i tried so hard and got so far" with balancing all those ecological systems"but in the end it doesn't even matter!!!"
