Live: Rattlesnake Meaning
Song Released: 1997

This song is about growing up, and returning to, a working class town. I'm not sure about the specific meaning of the rattlesnake metaphor, but it details the goings on of the boredom (ennui) of youth in the town which leads to the youths just getting up to no good; loitering about, drink driving, laughing gas etc.
The next part is reflecting on the town after escaping it, wondering if they were always this lame and its his outside experiences have let him see how bad it really is. He also realises how easy it could have been to become one of them. That is, to become working class, driving trucks and hunting.
It is also important to note that while 'ennui' is the French word for boredom, it doesn't directly translate as boredom in the English sense. It roughly translates to prolonged spiritual boredom and apathy you experience when you give up on life and have nothing to care about or be proud of. Its a perfect word to describe the feelings of listless idle youths in depressed unemployed areas that just mill around and make trouble.
