I know this is probably WAY out there but I don't know... This is what first came to my mind.

I thought maybe it was about mother mary and a teenage girl. The girl is pregnant. She's looking to Mary who was pregnant kind of unexpectedly too and basically without a choice. She's comparing herself. She's young, and she wants to live and love and such. She's kind of looking to mary for advise, and wondering how and why she got through it. She's even contemplating suicide or even killing the baby. Either way, she believes she's going to hell. She's thinking about suicide because she won't be able to handle the reactions of everyone around her. (she's a really good girl, "I'm a saint")

So this girl is basically freaking out and not knowing what to do.

"Sell my soul for anything, anything but you" that's for the baby. I think she decided on an abortion.

That is quite a good interpretation.
My interpretations usually are designed to acknowledge the personal, without making attributions or situations.. For long hard road out of hell, one need only be a martyr of depression. Mind you it is my impression that mr warner is bi-polar.. Just an assumption at best, as I'm not officially qualified to diagnose, and personally am apathetic in regard. Good song. Very thoughtful.

Considering the time in which it was written, and the era that came next (Mechanical Animals), I'd say this is a pretty literal song. It's about getting your feelings, your emotions, back, and fixing yourself up again.

I think it has something to do with being afraid of your past, therefore being afraid to love because you think your past will hurt your loved one.
