I believe it is simply about a child's nightmares and fears, and about how all we have to fear is fear itself (It's just the beasts under your bed, in your closet, IN YOUR HEAD).

It's about the human mind and what we fear about. How a child has nightmares.

This song was written by James because he used to have severe nightmares.

This song is linked to many meanings. The way I feel is this song has to do with faith. just listen to what I have to say. The way I take it is how we are taught to be scared of going to hell and that you must pray and believe in god or else bad things will happen, like sandman killing you.
The child is praying to god, he is scared of sandman, which is a creature that takes away children in their sleep, and its about how we are scared into believing. and it is a child because children are very influencable, and it is most little children that are taught to be scared of going to hell, and it is bullshit that we are taught that if you don't believe and obey what god says, you will die. You won't be good enough. this song does not rule out Metallica's faith though.
I am not saying they don't believe, or that they do, and I'm not saying that they worship satan or anything as to their beliefs. so don't twist my words and use them to lie. I'm just telling you what I think the song is about, and I am showing my beliefs, but not saying that is the bands belief. and don't rate the song or this interpretation as bad just because you believe something different than I do. The facts are there, and others will see the song differently, and thats fine.

I LOVE Metallica!
This song is simply about a young child who fears falling asleep to avoid the nightmares that come.
I also hear rumors that if the chorus is played backwards it supposedly says "I am the snake I am the snake yeah the snake", I haven't tried that but is it true???

It is about a kid having nightmares and being afraid to sleep. It has nothing to do with some ludicrously obtuse comparison to Iraqi trees.

In this song, tne message is that there really is nothing to fear and that it is in your head.

I think that the song is about fear and that fear is ONLY in ur head.
There are many examples:
Hush little baby, dont say a word
And never mind that noise you heard
Its just the beast under your bed,
In your closet, IN YOUR HEAD!
Exit light (When the child is awake)
enter night (the child's nightmare)
(The fear says:)take my hand
were off to never never land
(Means that the things that will happen in ur nightmares will never never happen in real life. The nightmare is never never land).

I guess it's about how chicken are turn into Mc nuggets, taking into account that the pyramids have trees in ther interior.
(Hint, i'm joking)
Now seriously, if it's just about a child having nightmares it would be a shame...
I, again, I, interpret it as some advise agains the policies of fear.
Hush, little one, don't say a word, there's no worth, in your head there is the ghost.
And to hel with you fanatics that think I am, I'm not taking just about religion.

To all the people below who interpret this as a song about the fears of a young child.....Metallica is notorious for deeper meanings they are a deeper band than most. I think it has a double meaning. A sick father who makes the child fear and then tells him his fears are unfounded and ridiculous. Its a dark song, but Metallica is good at writing those.
