The whole song (and music video) is based on gangs. Specifically, the gangs in the musical, West Side Story. The beginning of the musical, the two gangs continually tell the opposing gang to "beat it." And at the end, there is a rumble, where the two gang leaders fight to the death and a former gang member tries to stop them. Very similiar to how Jackson stops the two leaders from fighting in his music video. The snapping while walking was also done in the musical. I hope this is helpful to those who are trying to get to know Michael Jackson's work better.

This song is about how you shouldn't be a man and face the fight. If a guy tells you to beat it, beat it, don't come back asking for a fight, 'cause someone will get hurt, it's just not worth it.
