Smooth Criminal Lyrics
As He Came Into The Window
It Was The Sound Of A
He Came Into Her Apartment
He Left The Bloodstains On
She Ran Underneath The Table
He Could See She Was Unable
So She Ran Into The Bedroom

It is one of many MJ songs that runs deep in the phsyche and touches on an old age problem of spousal or partner abuse...violence really. The lyrics are deep and powerful. It is a reality that many, many women experience physical abuse and violence from their partners. It becomes their "doom" on these "black days"...and yet so many don't tell anyone or seek help...hence the song prompting the question "Annie, are you OK? Will you tell us if you're OK" and makes reference to asking the "bloodstains on the carpets" and being "struck down" in another "crescendo" of violence...These violent crimes are carried out by "smooth criminals" because usually this violent abuse is followed by a barrage of apology and remorse...but in many cases it never stops and the cycle is repeated.

The video and the song need to be seperated. The little girl in the video is not named Annie. Her name is Kate (or Katie). The music video is more of a short film and has a story line created seperatly. In fact, the ENTIRE video includes a robot. The criminal (mobster kidnaps kate) wants to hook the entire world on drugs. Micheal turns out to be a good gangstah guy by luck of the night sky, despite the opening scene.
anyway, you can search the story line for the movie. Then you will understand my crazy talk.
The lyrics were written about a woman being attacked in her own apartment. This woman is Annie. The rythm of the music and combination of words create a feeling that this attack has a sexual component. I dont think it matters if it is referring to someone he really knew. He is touching on a collective nerve in our culture. Sex and violence.
I was 6 or 7 when this song came out and he was my favorite already. I used to listen to this song a lot. I was absolutly convinced he was not saying the name Annie. My logic: I could not be that special.
Guess what? I am!
and, yes, I AM OK!!!!

I have to agree with Valerie W. with this one, it makes sense, and there were that many coincidences in a song to historical events, there had to be some relation. When I read that comment I was like, "my mind has officially been blown". (If you want to find the comment, I'm sorry I don't know where my comment is going to spawn.)

Love it! The Smooth Criminal visits me quite frequently myself these days. He is the slick salesman who I graciously allow to steal away from me my addictions, my controlling nature, my laziness and my indecision.
Left to my own devises, I rather fancy these parts of myself. When the Smooth Criminal hits town, I AM left cowering, as I am stripped... humble... and free.
Smooth Criminal - you steal from me the things I am more times than not, too scared to let go of myself.

I believe the song refers to the victims of Jack the Ripper. If you read the lyrics and check history, there are quite a few similarities:
1) "Annie" - the name of the Ripper's second victim
2) "It was a Sunday - What a Black Day" - Two victims were discovered on a Sunday (9/30/1888)
3) "And They Have No Way Of Knowing Of The Suspect,Or What To Expect" Ripper suspect unknown, never knew when he would strike next.
4) "He came to your apartment", "There's a sign in the window" and "Left bloodstains on the carpet" may all refer to Ripper's final known victim, Mary Kelly. She was murdered in her apartment, where there was a window pane that had previously been broken and "repaired" using newspaper and rags.
On a final note, this song was released in 1988, the murders that are attributed to the Ripper occurred in 1888

My interpretation of this song is a girl or young woman (Annie) is in her apartment, and a man (the "smooth criminal") comes in and attacks her, then leaves. A friend or neighbor of Annie's comes in and finds the bloodstains and other evidence of a struggle, finds her in the bedroom, and tries to revive her with CPR, asking if she's okay. But he's too late because Annie's been "struck down", or killed.

Annie was attacked in her apartmant by a criminal who drank a smoothie.Just kidding,I think annie is the girl with the black cat in the bigenning of the song.

I think the song is talking about "Annie" losing her innocence. She was taken advantage of by a guy who stole her innocence and used her only to leave her. "Smooth criminal", "player" or "heartbreaker"

I don't think its about anything sexual. i think its about an attack.

Annie are you Okay is what CPR students are taught when they go through training. You are supposed to ask, "___________, are you okay?" before you begin CPR. Most instructors use the name, Annie in the sentence. I think this was a cool title, given the 'victim' in the song was probably in need of emergency personnel.
This song sticks in my mind, and most of my non-crazy-MJ friends LOVE this, even though they don't like MJ. I will always be a fan.

i think the song is about a guy taking a girls virginity.. and the guy told the girl that he was gonna be with her forever but he just got what he wanted and left. he was a "smooth criminal".

The smooth criminal is a guy who either breaks into a girl's apartment and rapes or kills or is probably about a abusive relationship of some sort.

I think this song as a sexual crime bearing committed. Annie in the song seems like some kind of performer and MJ was her guardian or other... "bloodstains on the carpet" could mean that the hitman/rapist has already claimed another victim before Annie or killed someone in his way of getting close to her. "Underneath the table" She knew he was coming for her and like a dumb*** hid under a table....."Struck down" as in raped and robbed of her virginity. The continuous "Annie are you Ok" is Mj trying to comfort her over the phone during one of his mob meetings.
If you do in fact watch the full song from the Moonwalker movie, you will notice missing lyrics in the radio edit.
So they came into the outway
It was Sunday - what a black day
EVERYTIME I TRY TO FIND HIM
HE'S LEAVING NO CLUES LEFT BEHIND HIM
AND THEY HAVE NO WAY OF KNOWING
OF THE SUSPECT OR WHAT TO EXPECT
Mouth to mouth resuscitation
Sounding heartbeats - intimidations
So...in my conclusion for the movie and radio, MJ is an somewhat abusive gangster with a fiancee/protectee named Annie. On a sunday night, an opposing hitman raped her and left evidence to frame MJ as her rapist (The reason why the cops were on his tail). MJ was on a personal vendetta to find her rapist and take him down himself before the police do. (In relation to the omitted movie lyrics, MJ seems to know who the hitman is). As a sign of hopelessness, MJ takes refuge in a mob bar seeking info of the Smooth Criminal (in song) o.O
Shocking isn't it?

I believe this song is about a girl being raped/ attacked by a handsome stranger, maybe a man who tried to get her to like him but she wouldnt give in so he comes into her apartment. She then gets beat up quite badly so people have to try and save her life. Michael in the video/song is someone who is concerned about her safety and knows the person who attacked her.
This interpretation has been marked as poor. view anyway

Smooth criminal is about Jackson. Striking a man for kidnapping a little girl. In the video you will see that the little girl Annie is kidnapped at the end of the video. So basically, Michael Jackson is upset that She was kidnapped. So he goes to the club and tries to find the guy.
