This song is a dedication or tribute to lost loved ones who have passed away. As sung "you never said goodbye" gives a clue that this person or let's say in this case the girl that Michael is painting has passed away in some sort of accident. He is dealing with the pain and emotional damage put upon him from this loss. The psychological painful effects circulate in his head and from the optimistic corners of this artistic mind "something whispers in my ear and says". Refering to some sort of paranormal force or angelic spirit being communicating to him. This spirit is there to support and strengthen him as it says "you are not alone, I am here with you". Then it says "though you're far away, I am here to stay" which directs towards the idea that "I am here to stay" in your "heart" and at the same time in a better place. Same idea where it says "though you are apart" except vice-versa you are always in my heart, her heart. Lastly towards the end he says "whisper three words and I'll come runnin". These three words could be anything that expresses affection to each other, such as I LOVE YOU or it may simply COME TO ME. This means if she were here and were to whisper these three words he would go instantly to her physical presence.

In the first paragraph of lyrics: I seems like he's talking about a girl maybe dying and leaving him, they didn't get to say goodbye--
in the second: it could almost be like he really likes this girl and she doesn't feel the same and he's all alone, but then like..god tells him he's not alone, b/c he's in his heart, he understands and he still has him--
third: "though we're far apart, your always in my heart" it could be talkin bout god, or the girl doesn't feel the same about him, but he's still in her heart, she still cares bout him
"Just the other night..." the full paragraph sounds to me like this could be him saying it to the girl..or god saying it to him..."I can hears your prayers, your burdens I will bare, but first I need your hand, then forever can begin" bcause god can't come to you and tell you which way to go unless you ask him to, and open you heart to him..when you do he will always be there for you.
--i think this could go either way, like if this is about a girl, or god b/c...

he could be talkin about him and a girl falling outta love...or him being distant with god, and then god tells him he's still there, he just has to open up to him...pretty much how ever someone takes the song.. =) I love this one tho..its one of my favs!! rip micheal

When I watched this video, I noticed it featured Lisa Marie, and when I heard the commentry on it by Jackson's family and friends, my interpretation became this; This was to assure the world that their love, no matter how short it was, was real. It was written to Lisa Marie as a love song, assuring her she wasn't alone. "Who Is It" is pretty much the turn-around of this song.
