"Cancer" depicts the most emotional point in the Patient's story. Here the Patient is tired and bedridden from the cancer that is surely killing him. He is starting to come to terms with the fact that he will die, and begins to make arrangements and requests for his inevitable death, ("Call my aunt Marie, help her gather all my things, and bury me in all my favorite colors"). As he is doing so, he realizes that there is still something he just can't quite accept, and that is having to part with the one who loves him the most, his lover ("The hardest part of this is leaving you"). He tells his lover that he will not kiss her, possibly because he wants to sever his connection with her as much as possible to make it easier for him to cope with having to leave her. Also he may be regretful of being spiteful to her like he was in "I Don't Love You", and may feel that he does not deserve her forgiveness, which is a point that is touched on more in "Sleep". He goes on to somewhat apologize for his erratic behavior, saying he's just "soggy from the chemo". Finally he asks her that even if she were to leave him at this moment, he requests just one thing of her, that she'll never marry. ("And if you'd say goodbye today, I'd ask you to be true"). "Cancer" shows that the Patient still has the potential to go to heaven, and that he isn't all bad. This foreshadows his eventual change of attitude in "Famous Last Words".

The song title says it all. It was written from a cancer patients point a view. My chemical romance has stated that this was a very hard song to right, but one of their favorites, because it has so much emotion in it.

This song is about a cancer patient but it has meaning then that "know that I will never marry" is about getting hurt repeatedley in relationships. "baby I'm just soggy from the chemo" the patient is tired and depressed he feels like walking up to the door of death and beg him to take him. "the hardest part of this is leaving you" probably telling his mom, girlfriend, or sibling that he doesn't want to go but he has no choice. Remeber cancer is not only a disease it can also be depression, or grief, or anything else that can consume your entire life style.

i completely agree with this one because in a MCR recent aol sessions Gerard said that this song obviously deals with cancer but he said that's not all, it goes further than that

"This song is about a cancer patient but it has meaning then that "know that I will never marry" is about getting hurt repeatedley in relationships. It clearly states that it's about a patient going through cancer slowly and knowing things he will never do in his life. [[I will not ever marry]] ect. And that he has to know that he will never see his loved one again and it was hard saying goodbye to you [[cuase the hardest part of this is leaving you]] People, this is an extremely intense song packed with so much feeling and emotions. In one of Mcr's interviews I saw, Gerard and the band explained that it was so hard to sing the song, alone talk about it, they fear of it and gets them sad with the picture Gerard paints when he sings it. It's a really great song but so powerful in lyrics and emotion.

Well first of all, I want to say that this song is AMAZING! I think Gerard sings it beautifully. Anyhow, this song obviously is of cancer from The Patient's point of view.

LOTMS: Well SORRY if that interpretation was "DUMB" but I think that the song is pretty straightforward. I didn't think that I needed to explain a song as simple as that. And how is my opinion interesting? Its my opinion and many others as well.

I'm a person who has a cancer...and I have done what this song tells...I said goodbye to him...it's so sad when you have to leave your boyfriend...and the hardest part is because of my illness and not because of me....I still loves him....now on mtv there's "how to save a life" by The Fray....Daniele non ti dimenticheṛ mai...I will never forget you, you will always be my Starlight...

I think many of you have a valid point talking about if it is truly metaphorical or not (cancer: a disease or a new way of saying lifestyle?). I personally believe it is about the disease, though many believe it is from the patients point of view. I think it is from the mourners point of view. When my auntie died of cancer, I wanted to be her, so this song helped me. I believe that the part "know that I will never marry" is a peak of emotion in this song because it is lets say, Gerard talking about a girlfriend he lost to cancer (just an example, non ficiton, never happened) and he is talking about her, and he is trying to explain that before she died he wanted to marry her and the grief is coming out as regret. Also, I am writing this because I have a report on music, about a popular song in todays times that has an actual message hidden within it. This totally has a message!

It shows what some on ewith cancer is going through, It can help people who are going through cancer.
When my mum was diagonsed with cancer, I showed her the song, and she explained to me that's ow she felt, and when she dies she doesn't want to leeave us behind.

This song has helped me through all thesse hard time, and when my mum doies die, she wants every one to kown how she feels through a song!!! this song!!

well I don't think its a metaphor. I think you guys are looking into it too much. Gerard even said it's about going through cancer. It was written for his grandmother.

Such a great song. Its kinda self-explanitory. Its about going through cancer. Gerard said that "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge" was more about being angry and violence. But in the BLack Parade, they want you to carry on through such hardships such as losing a loved one to cancer.

I believe this song is about the "patient" dying from cancer but it has an underlying meaning which is the drugs and alcohol Gerard battled with being just like cancer, it took over his body and he had no control, he felt like it was killing him and he could see the devastating effects it had on his loved ones.

I'm a huge my chemical romance fan!
I've actually met them at 1 of their concerts!
i asked them about why they wrote this song as its my fav!
he lost 1 of his best friends to cancer and he wanted 2 write a song 4 his friends girlfriend!
it was partly for himself as well as it was hard 4 his friend to leave him!
and I know how he feels because both my parents died of cancer.
i totally understand how he's feeling.

missing the family 4ever.
yours sadly

Well the name says it all but if you want more I'll explain right now....Okay well the band is telling a sort of story from the cancer patients point of view. They are saying that they know that death will take them but they aren't afraid. They are telling all the people that the patient has come to know that he is going and that he loves them. The patient is telling his family and friends what he wants to happen when they bury him. It's a hard point of view to write but I think My Chemical Romance did a great job.
