Well I was there on the day they sold the cause for the queen. And when the lights all went out, we watched our lives on the screen. I hate the ending myself, but it started with an all right scene.
(At this point, one can assume that Gerard might choose to explain how people, at one time or another, take the time to reflect back on their lives. There are points *the beginning scene that gerard talks of* that we enjoyed and many times of regret (endings).
It was the roar of the crowd that gave me heartache to sing. It was a lie when they smiled and said you won't feel a thing. And as we ran from the cops, we laughed so hard that it would sting.
(People are often telling others that life is a happy thing, something that can always be viewed with an optomistic attitude. Well, for anybody who's actually been living life, I'm sure that you're well aware that it's a huge lie. There are points in your life where you get hurt or fall down. Sometimes you may even get to the point where you attempt to fool yourself/others with a facade of laughter *Running from the cops and laughing hard*.)
I spent my highschool career spit on and shoved to agree, so I could watch all my heroes sell a car on TV. Bring out the old guillotine, we'll show them all what we all mean.
(Gerard could be referring to his own past at this point. Times, where he was pushed around and made all outcasted while he watched others live successfully and happily.
The Guillotine was a device ment for quick killings during the french revouloution. If any of the french did not show enough support for their revoloution/ government, they were often sent to the guillotine and beheaded in front of everyone. And it is my belief that he is showing many others in life had been pushed and forced to do things they were against, or they would surely suffer for it in one way or another.)
CHORUS
If I'm so wrong, How can you listen all night long? Now will it matter after I'm gone? Because you never learn a goddamned thing.
You're just a sad song, with nothing to say, about a life long wait for a hospital stay. And if you think that I'm wrong, this never meant nothing to ya...
(The main point of this song is located right here! If he's so wrong about how your's and everybody's life has been, then why haven't you stopped listening?
Even when he stops "preeching", will you admit to learning that he's right?
If you continue to just mope around until death, there will be nothing to remember as life "flashes" before your eyes.* a sad song with nothing to say about a life long wait... Hospital bed*
*and if you think that I'm wrong, this never ment nothing to ya* This is his mssg to the listeners that if you don't see what he's trying to say, that what their songs are all about were just words that passed trhough your ears, never making you think of a meaning behind them*)
So go, run away. Just go, run away. But where did you run to, and where did you hid to find another way? Price you pay.
(So, go on continue to keep on running from these problems. But where will you go, and what will you do to find a life worth memorable moments. It's the price you'll pay for not getting up and facing these dark moments in your life)
**** I'm sorry if I've insulted any of you durning this opinion of what the lyrics are saying. Just for the record, it's just my opinion, and I'm not trying to attack any of your belifs... Thankyou for your time...*****

I think that this song is about how after the patient has looked back on most of his life, he tries to excuse what an asshat he's been by bringing up the good times, and blaming other people. In the end, he comes to terms that it's his own fault, but it doesn't matter. It doesn't even matter to him anymore. He's watching himself as a little boy, as a teen, as a young man, and as a full fledged adult, and wishes he could tell his younger selves that nothing he did in his life was wort a damn. Just 'A lifelong wait for a hospital stay'.

omg....the person who did the longest entry...she/he wrote "anonymous" as her name...that was great! I totally agree wit you. I don't really think it's about 9/11...i think that, that will not be brought up to much in their songs anymore. plus, it's about the patients life, soooo 9/11 probly won't be involved in "his"life. because, well I just don't really think so.

This song is one of my favorites on the CD. I don't know what it means, but it's one hell of a song. I like to listen to it as I cry in my room at night, thinking about all the bad crap going on in my life.

"This is a song about waking up from a dream and finding its gone, one day this will happen to all of you."
-Gerard Way.
I think a lot of the songs about how the bands grown up. How they've changed since 'I Brought You My Bullets...'. "We watched our lives on the screen" I think is about how big they now are, they can watch their lives, everyone knows about them now.
"It was the roar of the crowd that gave me heart ache to sing" I think this is almost a tribute to the fans. And about how they've helped the band through so much.
"It was a lie when they smiled and said you won't feel a thing" They're thanking them for their support.
"I spent my high school career spit on and shoved to agree" It's kinda saying how they're still bitter about what happened to them at school.
"well if you think that I'm wrong, than how can you listen all night long" This I think is having a dig at the people who say they've gone main stream.
Anyway sorry it took so long.

I'm actually finding it really hard to work out the meaning to this song but I love it and think it is the best song on the album.

I think this is the patient looking back at his life and... Talking to himself? or it could be his friend talking to him, but really he's thinking and wondering if it was a good life, remembering all the good and bad moments.

Well I was there on the day they sold the cause for the queen
And when the lights all went out, we watched our lives on the screen
I hate the ending myself, but it started with an alright scene
(I think the first line has something to do with their general message, their "cause", which most bands or famous people give up in order to benefit something else that has less meaning, or the "queen" who obviously has enough money, and hey witnessed it. I think the rest is about their reflection on starting out as a band and growing. They had fun in the beginning and all through the journey and will be sad when the band ends, but they can watch themselves go through the journey in many ways. It could also mean [as part of the patient's journey] he hates that his life has to end in such a terrible way.)
It was the roar of the crowd that gave me heartache to sing
It was a lie whe they smiled and said you won't feel a thing
And as we ran from the cops, we laughed so hard it would sting
(The first line of this part is definitely a shout out to the fans. They've said numerous times that the fans have saved their lives. "The roar of the crowd" encouraged them to keep playing and keep living and they're a stronger band because of it. The second line could be advice, telling you not to believe eveything you hear, that life isn't always great. The third is a response to that, saying it doesn't have to be all following the rules, and you need a little darkness and suffering to live a good life.)
If I'm so wrong
How can you listen all night long?
What will it matter after I'm gone
Because you never learned a goddamn thing
(I think this is a jab at "haters". They think MCR gives no message and everything they write is worthless garbage, when really if they took a listen they'd find that they're wrong. The third and fourth line say something about how it's worthless to even write about it because they'll never care and never listen, therefore, never learned anything from Gerard[or the patient]'s life and won't have gained anything by the time he's dead[wich I don't like thinking about! D= ].)
You're just a sad song with nothing to say
About a lifelong wait for a hospital stay
Well if you think that I'm wrong
This never meant nothing to you
(Again, a jab at "haters", saying they shun the idea of MCR because they just don't care about the same things and the song will make no impact on them if they disagree.)
I spent my highschool career spit on and shoved to agree
So I could watch all my heroes sell a car on TV
We got the old guillotine
We'll show em what we all mean
(the first line mentions his highschool life. It basically says that he was forced into believing what everyone else did, liking what everyone else did, etc. [trust me, in Gee's position in HS, you'll do anything to get out of it.] and eventually those people, his "heroes" that told him what to do eventually either sell out or do something worthless with their life. The guillotine reference was a metaphor, basically saying they have power now and they're using it for good, to send out the right message that we need to hear, wich counters the one they always got in highschool.)
If I'm so wrong
How can you listen all night long
What will it matter after I'm gone
Because you never learned a goddamn thing
You're just a sad song with nothing to say
About a life long wait for a hospital stay
if you think that I'm wrong
This never meant nothing to you
So go
Go away
Just go
Run away
But where did you run to?
And where did you hide?
Go find another way
Price you pay
(this is saying to move on in your life, if you don't care or don't agree then go somewhere else, but eventually you'll find that you were wrong and you missed out on something great, and now you have to pay the price.)
It's not like I automatically heard all this as I listened to it, I did have to think on it for awhile, but wow, this is such a beautiful song with so much meaning (even if my interpretation is wrong).

I was listening to the song (and I am now) It's Gerard looking back at his life. He hates how his life is ending, people he knows dying, past girlfriends, drinking, drugs, and do on. And his life started out pretty good. But he joined a group of people that weren't good for him(referring to the old drummer in the band)They smiled and acted nice but they weren't. How they never learned anything. Now, he left them, and his life is better, but his friends lives meant nothing, they simply would die and be forgotten about.

I'm pretty sure it's about someone dying and his life flashing before his eyes, only to wake up and find out that he was really dead.

Don't waste your whole life waiting for death and being afraid of it. by fearing death, you're already dead.
disenchanted is also an awakening. The word "disenchant" is to realize what was all a lie, and waking up from a fantasy. wake up from your fantasy that you live in a perfect bubble your whole life and do something!

My take on the song is it's about their life and somehow being disillusioned afterwards. As Gerard said, it's about waking up from a dream and realized it's over and it could all happen to you. I just love the lines 'you're just a sad song with nothing to say about a life long wait...' so sad but relateable. admirable lyrics and poignant melody sung passionately and it just makes me cry every time. my favorite song from mcr indeed.

HMMM I Dunno I didn't write it but nothing to do with the word war on London, Gerard writes his songs for the fans, not to trash other people.

I think that this song is about a guy (the patient) that is looking back on his high school years. It says "If I'm so wrong, how come you listen all night long". That means that if people tell him he's wrong, then they shouldn't have a reason to pay attention, but they listen all night long because deep down, they think that he's right. "You're just a sad song, with nothing to say, about a lifelong wait for a hospital stay". That means that people complain about their lives, but they don't have any meaning (or a real want to change their lives), and they spend their whole lives waiting to die. He's basically saying that since he's as good as dead anyway, he doesn't matter to them, and that he never did.

The song gives a lot of meanings... like in every verse of the song is a differnt scene... If you try to sing the song and imagine it like it's a movie or something, it would really seem like a patient dying and reflecting on his life... The patient here is gerard(I think)... and the song is like all about him and the band... The chorus part is ery.. I dunno, heartfelt... He's talking to his fans in this part of the song...
...disenchanted, the title says so much... It's like, he never thought his lie would turn out like this... and being disenchanted, is not a good thing...
it's basically another lonely song from gerard's golden heart...

I can't really interpret the whole song right now
but one line is always stuck in my head
"I hate the ending myself, but it started with an alright scene..."
that to me is just saying... well try to envision someone at the end (of life maybe) and maybe they're dying from something i.e. cancer or anything, and they realize that even though what they are going through right now is hella suckish, their earlier days, their childhood days were that bad, like they can remember the good times, you know. I don't know that's just what it feels like to me, I love the song, and I don't know why but that part just sticks with me.

Well I was there on the day

And when the lights all went out

It was the roar of the crowd
That gave me heartache to sing

And said, "You won't feel a thing"
And as we ran from the cops

Yeah yeah, oh
If I'm so wrong (so wrong, so wrong)
How can you listen all night
long? (all night long, night
long)
And will it matter after I'm gone?
Because you never learned a goddamned thing
You're just a sad song
With nothing to say
About a life long wait for a hospital stay

night long)
Now will it matter long after I'm gone
Because you never learned a goddamned thing
You're just a sad song
With nothing to say
About a life long wait for a hospital stay
Well if you think that I'm wrong
This never meant nothing to you
So go, go away, just go, run away.
Now where did you run to?
And where did you hide?
Go find another way
Price you pay
Woah oh...
Woah oh...
Woah oh...
Woah oh, woah oh, woah oh, woah oh...
You're just a sad song
With nothing to say
About a life long wait for a hospital stay
Well if you think that I'm wrong
This never meant nothing to you, come on
You're just a sad song
With nothing to say
About a life long wait for a hospital stay
Well if you think that I'm wrong
This never meant nothing to you
At all
At all
At all
At all
At all
okay, well, the way I see it, in the first verse (Well I was there on the day
they sold the cause for the
queen
And when the lights all went out
We watched our lives on the screen
I hate the ending myself
But it started with an alright scene) its sort of like your dead or dying and you are watching your live go by. everything that happened, and everything you try to forget. gerard hetes the end because, that's the end of his life, dying.
next verse (It was the roar of the crowd
That gave me heartache to sing
It was a lie when they smiled
And said, "You won't feel a thing"
And as we ran from the cops
We laughed so hard it would sting) sort of means back to 9/11/2001. gerard was there for 9/11 and that's when the whole band kind of started. The whole riot made him want to show he had to make a differance so he sang. In early on, he was having a hard life. anyone who lives life knows that it really hurts sometimes. and in that sometimes, you wear fake laughter to get people (metaphoically using cops in the song) off his case.
thris verse (If I'm so wrong (so wrong, so wrong)
How can you listen all night
long? (all night long, night
long)
And will it matter after I'm gone?
Because you never learned a goddamned thing)means, you actually have to pay attention to gerards lyrical meanings. like he's saying, after he is gone, will we remember what e said to us through his music instead of just listening to them and not thinking about the meaning so you never learn anything from him. He wants you to pay attention to what he's trying to say to you. Its like ring around the rosie, most people think its a happy little tune, but it's about a plague in germany.
fourth verse (You're just a sad song
With nothing to say
About a life long wait for a hospital stay
Well if you think that I'm wrong
This never meant nothing to you) means live your life to the fullest. live through bad times, good times, and everything. I believe that you should never die without a scar. for me, I have at least 20 and a week ago, I almost got hit by a car. when I was 4, my dad was driving us home from the airport and withing 5 minutes after we got on the road, our car was under a bus. So live through everything so you have a lot of events to flash before your eyes when you are dying.
fifth verse (I spent my high school career
Spit on and shoved to agree
So I could watch all my heroes
Sell a car on tv
Bring out the old guillotine
We'll show 'em what we all mean) is gerard refering to his past back when he was in highschool 13 or 14 years or so ago. He was pressured into stuff, he watched his heros make something out of their lives. and he says how his live was really bad at times.
sixth verse (So go, go away, just go, run away.
Now where did you run to?
And where did you hide?
Go find another way
Price you pay) is about hiding from life. what do you hide from? how are you hiding from it? and he is saying face it, don't hide it.
so remember, this is only my opinion. but from what I know, I pretty much got it.

I think you all are looking at this song too narrowly and specifically. I think it's a poignant political piece. There are a few key phrases that show what this song is really about. "I was there on the day they sold the cause for the queen" To me this is about materialism. People with a cause deciding to sell out because "the queen" i.e. some chick wanted *insert material object*. Same thing with "...watch how my heroes sell a car on TV" Everyone in high school worshiped the rich guys whose dads owned car dealerships. "Bring out the old Guillitine" referring to when, in the french revolution they executed the aristocrats of whom these people represent modern day versions. And, in the end, all the people who buy into that crap are "just a sad song with nothing to say..." because in the end how much material possessions we've gathered doesn't matter at all, we're just "waiting for a hospital stay" if that's what are lives are all about. Now, personally, I think you could view this song as directed at a particular person who has bought into the material worship, possibly a girl who just married the rich guy prompting "I hate the ending myself, but it stated with an alright scene"---but that parts more my personal opinion.
