'Things are better if I stay' could suggest that he felt so bad about her death that he wanted to join her, ie kill himself, but then he decides not to, realises that he can still survive and says 'things are better if I stay'.'Can you hear me/ Are you near me?'reflects him still believeing that she is nearby and some vain hope that she can in fact hear him, and will respond. His plea 'Can we pretend to leave and then we'll meet again...' appears to him him assuring her that although he won't be joining her just now, he'll be with her again someday. In this way, he is able to put himself at peace.
Other points:
'When every star fall brought you to tears again' is a reflection on the pain she went through while alive, and probably expresses regret that he was not there for her more
'We are the very hurt you've sold'could be something to do with manipulation
There are several stages of grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. His harsh comments towards her ('Every heart you break' 'ther very hurt you sold')reflect the anger stage. Typically, this is comprised of 'how dare they leave me', so he could be masking bitterness at this. Bargaining is not a huge theme, but 'can we pretend' reflects this to a small extent. I think depression's an obvios one (=P). Therefore, we could say that it is a song about grief. And it does appear to me that he eventually accepts her death.
I think the video reflects this. Her rising again to dance is his inability to accept that she is dead, but when she falls back in the coffin, he is at peace with her death and has grown to accept it. At the end, the placing of her in the hearse puts an end to it. Mind you, I think this is irrelevant to the song itself as I read somewhere that Gerard did not really want to have her dance, just thought it was an interesting side-point.
So, in the end it is irrelevant whether it's about his grandma or some secret girlfriend or whatever. It's a song about loss, and surviving that loss.
(Btw, when I say 'he' I don't mean Gerard necessarily, I mean the man in the song, just before we all gather to bite my head off =P Although this could be the story of him trying to get over his grandma)

It's about Gerard and Mikey's grandmother, Elena Lee Rush. She basicly taught Gerard everything to sing, perform, paint, draw, dance, etc. Gerard was very close to her and the song and I'm quoting from Gerard, "I really wanted to pay tribute to her in some way. She's done a lot for me and I wanted to pay tribute to her and I figured this would be the best way."
I know how that feels.

The song is about their grandmother ELENA, not HELENA, like some would say :)

The whole album, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, tells a story. A man dies in a car crash and goes to hell. He thinks that his girlfriend, Helena, also dies and went to heaven, but she never died in the first place. He then strikes a deal with the devil to be with Helena in return for bringing him 1000 evil souls. The song Helena is the first song on the album and in it the man is mourning the loss of Helena "So long and goodnight".
The song is also partially about Gerard Way's Grandmother, Elena, dying. The song, as well as the album, is dedicated to her. She is mainly who the part "Can you hear me? Are you near me?" is for.

This song is an angry open letter than Gerard wrote to himself, because since My Chemical Romance getting so big he never get to spend as much time as he wanted with his grandmother Elena in the last years of her life.
It's a tribute, and if you ever go to any MCR shows before they play this song he always gets the crowd to say "Hi Grandma!".
This song could possibly be called "Helena" because of it's links to the name Elena, and because the Misfits also had a song called Helena.

I heard this in an interview (ah, how I love my interviews) straight from Gerard's mouth, so don't say I'm making this shit up.
His gradnmother Elena was called Helen by most of the family. Gerard knew that her real name was Elena, and his mind, he put the two together and came up with Helena. I agree that he probably liked it because of this MIsfits's song, but that's how he first got it.

This is about Mikey and Gerard's GRANDMOTHER Elana Lee Rush. She tought gerard how to sing, draw etc. On a interview, Gerard even said this song is about Mikey's and my grandmother and I was really uncomfortable about he her dancing but then I realised that its the most important part so she could have her last dance.

Okay this song is about Gerard's and Mickey's dead grandmother. Gerard wanted to pay tribute to his grandmother because she taught him everything.
This album reflects their entire first two years of touring. They say "this is a false story to mirror our first two years of touring." They added some stuff in but this album is basically a biography of their first two years together as a band, and don't argue with me because it's in an interview.

OK people, we need to have a little discussion here about this song...
IT WAS DEDICATED TO THEIR GRANDMA! ELENA! Ok, that cleared?
Now here's the deal:
I'm not an expert on Gerard or the band, but someone has to put this out in the open...THEY LIKE TO SING ABOUT DEATH! Ok...so it shouldn't be a surprise to most of you people who are all like "Why would someone talk about thier Grandma in that way?"
Frankly, I don't know. But here's the thing: Everyone expresses themselves differently. For me, I like to shout and sing and dance like I'm crazy. My cousin, she likes to express herself through drawing gorey pictures (which are CREEPY!). So Gee may express himself through Death and sad stuff like that. But he still expressed how he feels and his sadness for his grandma through this song. It's not like he hates her, he probably misses her really badly, and that's how he EXPRESSED IT!
I rest my case....

Well I think that they wrote this song thinking about Gerard's girlfriend (you already read the story in another persons comment so why would I write it again?) because it fits in so well with the lyrics, he desided to stay (things are better if I stay) but she killed herself (so long and good night) but it's inspired in MIKE AND GERARDS GRANDMOTHER tooo!! and she died and mayby they can't asimilate it well and they are kinda mad thay she "left them" so that's why they say "so whats the worst you take from every heart you brake" and MAYBE it's because thay blame themselves for her death but I don't think they could blame themselves for her death so forget that I said that.

All you dumb fucks who think it is about a girlfriend, it is not. Gerard is not that fucking disrepectful to use his grandmother to cover up for an ex/girl. What great MCR fans you guys are.

I read a interview in a J-14 magazine and he said (he is talking about his grandma) "We were really close, She was an artist and taught me pretty much everything I do today--how to sing and paint and how to perform. She spent all this money to get the band our first real van. We promised to pay her back, but she wouldn't take the money. So we paid her back the only other way I knew which was to write the song Helena for her." --gerard
and in Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge he said the Cd was dedicated to Elena Lee Rush who is Gerard's Grandma

Right everyone who says it's about his grandmother are partially right but so are the ones who say it is about his girlfriend.
"Like a blade you stain" means his girlfriend took her own life as they made a suicide pact.
"Things are better if I stay" this line is about Gerard deciding he had to stay for his brother Mikey and his grandmother was ill so he wanted to be with her. The album and song are both dedicated to his grandmother but the song is also dedicated to his girlfriend that is the true meaning of this song as I saw on TV an intimate interview with Gerard.

Well the song could mean many things. I personally think it's about Mickey and Gerard's grandamother. If you really think about it there is a very slight chance that I would be about a exgirlfriend...who would be dumb enough to use there grandma to cover up an ex...but hey that's my personal opion. Just like every other submission in here.

Helena is tribute to Gerard & Mikey's late grandmother who's name was really Elena but she was always known as Helena. Gerard was very close to his grandmother, She taught him how to draw, Sing and paint. She also bought Gerard his first car wich is the van in the I'm Not Okay video.

OK PEOPLE, STOP ARGUING ABOUT WHAT HELENA REALLY MEANS...
Though the song in general is about the band members Gerard Way and Mikey Way's late grandmother, it was stated in an interview that the video told a different story. The music video shows the funeral of a young, beautiful, twenty-something year old girl named Helena, who, according to Gerard Way, died tragically. There is speculation that she could be the female of the "Demolition Lovers" that chronicle some of the band's songs, but evidence from the song leads most to believe that the video Helena died in a fatal car accident.

helena is about the suicide of Gerard's girlfriend. They planned it together but he decided not to go along with it(things are better if I stay). She stabbed herself( just like the blade you stain) and she broke many peoples hearts.
Everyone says it is about his grandma. He did dedicate the cd to her but this song was already written. He tributes it to her because it is about death but did not right it for her.

The song is writen for Helen Rush who is the grandmother of Gerard and Mikey. Also the rosary on the actual cd of three cheers for sweet revenge is her rosary. There really is nothing else to say about the song. I think mcr would want the fans to inturpret the song however they want. The only thing we can honestly say about the song was that it was inspired by their grandmother Helen's death (they were very close to her) and that it is an amazing song by the band.
Forever a fan of mcr Kayelilith
