i personally feel the song is about a relationship where the man is abusing his girlfriend/wife. I also think the lyrics are split up into some sort of conversation between the couple, where Gerard sings both sides, for example:
Man:Well, when you go
Don't ever think I'll make you try to stay
And maybe when you get back
I'll be off to find another way
Woman:And after all this time that you still owe
You're still the good-for-nothing I don't know
man:So take your gloves and get out
Better get out
While you can
Then later on...
Woman: Sometimes I cry so hard from pleading
So sick and tired of all the needless beating
Man: But baby when they knock you
Down and out
It's where you oughta stay
I think this part...
When you go
Would you even turn to say
"I don't love you
Like I did
Yesterday"
...is him taunting her as if as he thinks that he knows that she won't be able to say that to him, so he can pretty much dare her to as much as he likes.

i think all you guys are taking the lyrics to literally. I believe its a metaphor for Gerards struggle with alcoholism and he is getting the will power to overcome the disease but it still holds a power over him so he needs to get it out of his life completely before he gives in to it again.

simella: I think that you're right. He's overcome the need for alcohol and drugs and wants to get it out of his life, but part of me also thinks that the one who thinks that it's about a couple talking is right also. They both make sense.

With all that Gerard and the guys have stated about the making of this album, or DURING the making of it, I find this and several other songs on this album to be very revealing.
The thought that this album is all about "the patient" is very romantic, isn't it? And it's obviously working for them. But the truth is, most of these songs are much more personal and closer to them than you may can imagine.
Several major incidents happened during the time of preparing and making this piece of work (their best so far). Do you honestly believe they couldn't bring those things with them into these songs?
These incidents could be seen as terminal conditions, or definitely, inevitable conclusions to certain things in their lives. There is a strong tone of reluctant acceptance throught this album.
Think about what they have talked about in some of the interviews they've given and then you'll start seeing these songs totally opposite of what you were originally told to see them as.

OK, I know this is not an interpretation, but whoever likes this song should go on YouTube and check out the video. It's pretty cool, although freaky. This lady has HUGE eyes so if anybody sees the video and knows is the eyes are special effects or the REAL eyes tell me.

Oh god. I really gotta start putting interpretations on here but if you go to YouTube and look up this music video. There are a ton of comments arguing about gerard being married or not. lmao.

Personally I think this song's about Gerard and his girlfriend and the "would you have the guts to say I don't love you like I loved you yesterday" is actually him talking to himself asking himself why he was such a pussy and didn't actually say to her "look I just don't love you anymore"

I think this song gives a little insight to what the patient did in his life. I think it implies that, perhaps, in his youth, he was a boxer. That he chose boxing over the girl he loved, and the song is from her point of view. I don't think he broke up with her, but that he ignored her to the point where every time he left to go do his boxing thing, she wished he would just come out and tell her that he didn't love her anymore.
^^ That actually makes the most sense to me. I bought the version of "The Black Parade" that has a book about making of the album coming along with it. There's a picture of boxing gloves next to the lyrics for "I don't love you".

I believe this song could possibly be about the person the patient loves leaves him ( possibly after he has told the person he has been diagnossed with cancer) So he's telling her when you go would you even turn to say I don't love you like I did yesterday as she walks out on him. SO Fix your eyes and get out. he says possibly because she's crying and her crying for him is meanless after what she has done to him.

I think Simella has hit the nail on the head and the rest of you are wrong. I don't love you is a metaphor and Gerard himself has even said it's about his struggles with substance abuse.

I think the song is about Gerard and how he loves this girl but she's no good, so he won't make her stay if she doesn't want to, but he knows she'll come crawling back, each time worse than before. but he won't let himself fall in love with her because it would only make his life worse. but he falls in love with her then slowly falls out of love "I don't love you like I did yesterday" he makes an excuse for her every time she comes back, because he loves her, he just won't admit it. "and after all this time that you still owe you're still the good for nothing I don't know"

I think the song is about a girl who like gets beat up by her boyfriend but not on purpose. The only reason he does is because he is drunk and turns into a mean alcoholic.

I agree that the song is about a boxer at first I thought it was about an abusive relationship the patient was in. To my knowledge I was informed that on the black label limited edition album there is a pair of boxing gloves next 2 the song name and lines such as "take your gloves and get out" , "another dollar is just another blow" and "sick n tired of all the needless beatings" exemplifies the idea that gerard is singing from the girls perspective pleading the patient to stop boxing and show that he loves her as she feels unloved and ignored....

I think in a sense, since the rest of the CD dwells on a story, this song as well follows suit. Like most said, I believe it's about the patient reliving through his 'after view' post death, he sees the bad relationship he was in. Maybe the patient had an alcoholic past.

This song is about a relationship Gerard Way had got out of, its his song to his ex girlfriend and it wasn't about a abusive relationship.

Once I had this girlfriend, and she was great we dated for a long time she told me she loved me and I told her I loved her, we thought we were going to spend the rest of our lives together but people change and we ended up arguing a lot until we realized that we weren't the same people. We loved who we were but we couldn't go back to who we were because that was a different time in our lives. It was emotional because the feelings of love were still there but we didn't want to lie to each other.
But I could be completely wrong.

This song is about the patient & his girlfriend/wife/lover whatever you think she is, they're having problems because of all the emotions w/ cancer & the had a fight and she's crying, he feels like she doesn't love him anymore and she leaves in frustration.

I think this song kinda represent how a girl thinks she loves this guy who turns out to be abusive, and by saying "I don't love you like I did yesterday" after the first beating she realizes he's a jerk and sees him in a different way, a worse way.

I think this song means that...the boy is asking if the girl HAD ever loved him...cause it says I don't love you like I loved you yesterday...like she loved him yesterday..and yesterday means when they are still together... That means the girl didn't love the boy when they are still together but maybe only liking...
