When patient dies of cancer and he journeys with the black parade on to the next life he is shown things that he did in his life and how they affected the people around him. He is shown a story about 'the soldiers' and 'mother war' a family of five sons and one extremely spiteful mother. Mother war hates her sons and wishes that she had had daughters instead. Then the war starts (world war two) and the five brothers all decide to leave and go fight for their country. They tell their mum about it but she starts screaming at them and telling them that they're idiots and if they go then they should not bother coming back. So the brothers all leave and go to war. As the war rages on they continuously keep sending letters back to their mother telling her that they love her and that the war is bad etc. She refuses to write back to them. Eventually she replies telling them, to what we can only imagine is outright hatred, that she wants them to die...when they receive this letter they say, "fine, we hate you too. We don't have a mother anymore..." They have a massive party the night before they, and they're regiment, have to leave on a dangerous mission, and they sing-

"we all carry on, when our brothers in arms are gone
so raise your glass high for tomorrow we die and return from the ashes...etc."

When they go on the mission they all get killed.

(Originally Gerard had wanted machine gun fire going off in the background on the last verse of mama but they decide that it made the verse too distorted and left it out).

As they're dying they're all screaming out in agony for their mother. They want to see her again because they love her so much. Eventually they all stop screaming and die. When their mother receives the letter from the war office that all five of her sons have been killed she burst out into tears because she really did love them and never wanted them to go to war. That's the tradgedy of the whole thing. They now have no mother and mother war no longer has any sons.

Patient is shown this story because it reflect the relationship he had with his mother before he died. And can I note out that the soldiers are all members of the Black Parade. If you've seen Gerards artwork or any still frame shots you'll see them in the background.

You're both wrong. This song is actually about a young man who went to fight in a war despite his mother's wishes. He ends up dying in the war and his mother is angry and sad for what happened to him due to his blatant defiance and stupidity.

I think Mama is about Mother war, for example the war in iraq, and all that kinda stuff.
for example sons going to war:
"you should have raised a baby girl" etc etc

you guys are soo off.
it is about the patitent who was in the military, and he got discharged because he has cancer, and when he's dead,he remember the times at war and the letters he wrote to his "mama"[mother war].who, ironicly is anti-war.when gerard says, when we go don't blame us,he's asking his mom not to be mad at him.he also feels sorry for all the bad that he's done.thats what I think......

A soldier writing a letter to his mother telling her how bad it is and that he's not sorry for anything he did to her

I think this song is about some lady's son going off to war, against his mothers wishes. But seeing as the album is about the patient dying of cancer, I think it's about him and his relationship with his mother, maybe Gerard is speaking about his life throughout the patient. But this song I think is about the patient remembering going off to the war, and how he knew his mother always wanted a baby girl instead of a boy who would get into trouble and leave her for the war. The mother was afraid of her son dying, and then the son told her how it is. It's like. well yeah I might die, but hey "Mama we all go to hell." "Mama we're all gonna die."

I think it's about war, but not an actual war where there are guns, bombs ect.. I think is about a war between life and death. The war that "the patient" ,in this story, had to fight. Does it make any sense?
But It could also be about a war.

It is about killing somebody in the war. "And these things that I've done with this f of a gun". It means he has shot something or someone. "Mama we all go to hell". Hes saying that he's going to hell because of his actions.

Actually, codyXdeadX is off. The fourth entry is the one on the ball. "Mama" is about mother war and her five sons.

I think it's about war. Because of the bombs at the beginning of the song and the lyric "Well Mama, what's war done to my legs and to my tongue" and "But the shit that I've done with this fuck of a gun!"

This an interpretation in that 'mama' is war and that he could of served his country better

The dude that said the patient hadn't died is wrong because Gerard believes that when you die, your fondest memory comes to retrieve you (in this case, a parade) and the parade is telling him that he died!

Oh.my.god.That idiot who said that the song was about Gerard telling his mother he was gay is extremely wrong.Gerard has had girlfriends since he was 17 or 18(only to end when he broke up with his girlfriend). Also, the patient HAS died because My Chemical Romance believe that when you die, your fondest memory comes to retrieve you(in this case, its a parade)and tell you that you are now dead. The REALLY long entry near the start is ABSOLUTELY right :)

I think the song is about a mother's son going to war, yeah. And she doesn't want him to go to war and she's like "ok, bye then" cos it says "and just you mind your manners when you go" that's something a mother would say but not about you dying almost as if she wants her son to die cos he's going off to war against her wishes. But yeah at the end when he's dying he's crying for his mother and that. Yeah and he's like "i'm going to die anyways except it" and like maybe he thinks the war is going to kill him and his mother anyways whether he fights or not "they're building a coffin your size"

Clearly this song is fictional and is just part of the storyline of the patient.

I think what this song is saying is basically "our mother made us famous, but at what cost?" Or at least something along the lines of that.

Mama isn't about the patients mother

mama is one of the marchers in the parade called "Mother war" the song is about the patient going of to a war

mama we all go to hell

are the men going off to the war

i'm writing this letter could just be a reference to letters home from soldiers

mama we're all gonna die

is that odds are most of them will die in the war

and when we go into the flames
we'll let the fire just bath us

is the soldiers marching off to battle

you made us sound so famous

is the homeland making the soldiers out to be heroes in exchange for their lives

and right now their building a coffin your size

is about the pomade coffins built for soldiers in the case of a death

she said "you ain't no son of mine"

is the homeland rejecting the soldiers when they needed their homeland's support

only to get less supplies and weak armor

its really quite pleasant except for the smell

are t he soldiers explaining their surroundings

i'm just thrill you'd call me your sweet heart and maybe then sing you a song

is mother war (the homeland) congratulating the soldiers for their victory and welcoming them home with a song

but theirs shit that I've done with this fuck of a gun
you would cry out your eyes after all

is the soldiers saying they've done things o horrible in war that it would bring their homeland to tears

and we're damned after all

is the patient and his troops claiming they are damned for the horrible things they've done

I think that the five sons that that one anonymous guy told about are representative of the 5 members of the band.

Really I don't think the patient has had a perfect relationship w/ his mom and he sends her a letter telling her that he has cancer and he wishes that he was a better son to her.

I kinda think the song could be about mother war and the five songs and the patient going off to war but at the same time it seems like he is telling his mom that he wants to kill himself cause it is believed if you kill yourself you go to hell
i think he went to war and saw such horrible tragedies and then was diagnosed with cancer and it was all too much for him
"a lifelong wait for a hospital stay"from disenchanted
thats what I think
alot of MCR songs are kinda abstract and are left up to personal interpretation

I think that it's sorta an apolgy and telling his mom that's how it goes.

Okay.
He goes off to war[because he was drafted]"you should've raised a baby girl" his mom doesn't want him to go and he goes anyway and then he writes a letter "i'm writing this letter and wishing you well"Saying I'm sorry but I don't think I'm going to live,So have a good life. And to stop asking him if he is going to live or not because he doesn't want to hear her cry.And he'll she her in another life "when you go return to me my love"Then the dead have decided that it's time for her to die "They're biulding a coffen your size."And they reunite and he is saying that I'm sorry I was a horrible son when we were we were living"I should have been a better son."Because he is in hell and she is going to heven.
