Personally, I don't think that this song has anything to do with prison, rape, or homosexuality.
I think if you really know about Gerard's past with drugs and drinking and keep that in mind while reading the lyrics, you can sort of see the meaning. Gerard compared the effect that drugs had on him as something that kept him imprisoned.
In the first verse, Gerard talks about a gunfight. I think this was him describing the beginning of his addiction. He thinks that it could never get him, as in it won't defeat him because he thinks he's so tough. Then he says, "To wage this war against your faith in me" I think this could be referring to the way that his friends and band mates tried to help him, but he refused and start doing drugs and heavily drinking.
The chorus is basically him debating his addiction. Knowing that it is killing his career, but it also makes him feel better. And the quote "Too much, too late, or just not enough of this pain in my heart for your dying wish, I'll kiss your lips again." The dying wish is the useless demand from his friends for him to stop, but he thinks that he strong and that it won't kill him, so he'll be able to 'kiss your lips again.'
The second verse, I believe, everybody takes too literary. People cheating and losing are fellow friends that seem to have it together, but really are also drinkers and drug-abusers. His cellmate in this case is where Bert comes in. He was basically going through the same thing at the time. Then he questions his sanity with "Am I losing myself?" When he says that he misses his mom, it could be him getting fed up with being on the road and he misses his family. When he says, "Will they give me the chair or lethal injection?" That could be him suggesting, maybe realizing, that his addiction is killing his career as well as him.
On the bridge, he sings, "What they ask of you will make you want to say so long." He means that he found out that the demands of being a musician overwhelmed him and made him suicidal.
The screaming about the hotel puzzled me, but I believe that the hotel represents his accomplishment as a musician because when you really made it you get to stay at hotels while touring instead of sleeping in vans. So setting the hotel on fire is him killing his career.
"I won't go down by myself, but I'll go down with my friends" is his realizing that by doing what he was doing, he's also killing his band, his friends, so when he goes go, others will also fall.
PS- He is NOT going out with Bert. He has a girlfriend. And stop talking about being gay as if it's so bad. If he, or anyone in the band, is, indeed, gay, why should you care? If you like My Chemical Romance, you shouldn't care about their personal lives. Their music is what matters.

To the one who said "if Gerard is gay, why wouldn't he have liked that": This is rape. Rape isn't a *pleasant* thing - in fact probably one the most horrible things - it is considered torture. I think your comment is very very immature.

I know the song is about prison rape, obviously. I mean Gerard even said so in his interview on launch. But it does kind of seem like there is more to it than that. Really though, the only ones who will ever know what the song is really about are the band.
I dont know who in the band is gay. But that's kind of the idea, isn't it? They go out of their way to keep us guessing. Because you're supposed to like them for the music, and the ideas, not because you want to fuck them. And besides, I think one of the main ideas they are trying to get across is that a person's sexuality doesn't matter.

Before I start I just want to say, I don't think any of the members are gay. Yeah, I think they kiss for a joke. Big deal even if one or more of them were gay it wouldn't matter, because it's about rape. It's rape, it's a big deal. You sleep with who you want to, you shouldn't be bullied and abused into it.
Anyway, I think when it starts off, it's almost like he'd fight and rather die then go to prison 'They say, "Come with your arms raised high!"
Well, they're never gonna get me,' and I think it's saying once you've been in prison, 'Your life...will never be the same' I don't know, though, that's a guess that could be about something else.
Also, I think it's a very sad song about being bullied, humiliated and also being worried about if you're gonna be killed 'Will they give me the chair,
Or lethal injection' and wondering how your family is. You're in prison and most people deserve to be in there if they have commited a crime, but not to have horrible things happen to them.

*eye roll* Here we go again...
Three things you must know before I start
1. Gerard is not gay.
2. He wrote the lyrics. He is the only member of MCR who writes lyrics. Don't ask me why, I don't know.
3. Gerard has never been to prison. He's never done a lot of things he sings about, such as rise from the dead, shoot a guy, etc.
This song was inspired by a night Gerard and Bert spent together while they were both at the peak of their drug/drinking problems (so probably some time between spring '03 and summer '04) They trashed a hotel room, destryoed the mini bar, and got so drunk they didn't remember their names. Gerard later sobered up and took some time to relect back on that night, and thought up some great and rather creepy analogies. No, they never had sex, and I'm pretty sure Bert is not gay. It's one large and grotesque analosy.

OK, first off, Gerard said he gets inspiration by reading the newspaper or watching movies. I think this song has its part of fiction. I doubt he got raped in jail, honestly, and I doubt he stayed in jail for so long to actually find it THAT awful and "oh but no one knows what I went through I miss my mom" type of thing.
And stop the gay discussion already, it's retarded.

Gerard is not gay (I know every one has said this but here is PROOF)
A fan asked him if he was bi. Frankie and Mikey both snapped up and looked at her like o_o, but Gerard said it was okay and smiled, then said he was NOT bi and is straight and has a girlfriend (my note: her name is Olivia).
Anyway, it's about prison.

Who cares if Gerard Way is gay or not? Why does everyone make such a big deal about it? Frank: Iero kisses Gerard because he says it helps with Gerard's depression. Anyway, both of them are still hot as hell!

Even if they are gay, its not like it should matter. They make music. If you like their music, way to go! if not, well there's your opinion. They make music, its not lke they want to confuse you and make people go around on sites discussing whats in it, it's music. Dance to it. Listen to it. No one cares, they do it for fun. Enjoy it.

It doesn't say "we're two men as god has made us" it says "we're only as human as god has made us" symbolising humans do things they don't mean. No MCR member is gay.

Okay, this song is just about prison rape and being someone's bitch.
and also:
1. Ray is the only single one.
2. Gerard isn't telling the name of his girl friends name so he calls her Katmandu.
3. Frankie is in a VERY serious relationship.
4. Gerard has NO children.

Okay.... hahaha.. Gerard is not gay, and is not dating Bert from The Used. I think it's pretty funny that anyone would believe that bullshit rumour. They are both as straight as fucking arrows. That's pretty funny though. Yeah the song is about prison rape, that's it.

Woah, chill out everyone. Bert doesn't even talk to Gerard anymore, or anyone in MCR (though the rest of the guys in The Used do). They had a nice little fall out, and now don't really like each other, so there is no fucking way that they are dating. I stand behind what everyone else has been saying, and this song is about prison rape. Fun, happy stuff.

First of all...GERARD IS NOT NOT NOT NOT GAY!!!! This song is about Gerard's experience with homosexuality, where, in a game of Truth or Dare, he kissed Bert McCracken. And it's just about their friendship. ah durrr.

GERARD IS NOT GAY! He has a girlfriend the only one that's single is Ray and it's not like Ray is gay because none of them are. Frankie's girlfriend's name is Jamia. Gerard's girlfriend's name is Olivia. Mikey's girlfriends name is Alishia, and I don't know Bob's girlfriend's name. None of them are gay.

Jealousyellowstar, your comment was SO immature. I am a straight girl, but I still wouldn't like to be raped by a bunch of guys that have been in prison for the last twenty years. What makes you think that he would enjoy that? He is not even gay. I think it is kind of an inside joke with the band.

Idiots who are shouting he's not gay like there's something to be ashamed of in being gay fck you.
I don't know his sexuality, but rape is horrible whether you're a gay man, straight man, lesbian, straight woman or bi man or woman. It still hurts, it's still an invasion of privacy as well as a whole lot of other stuff and it screws with your head and body.
No, you can't be 'turned' gay. If you're in prison a long time you might figure out your sexuality or if you're straight it'll just be a time of celebacy (sp?)
I'm not an expert on the song but I DO know sexuality and I just wanted to clear up the homophobic ideas that were being talked about.

I was watching an interview he did and he said it was about someone raping a guy in prison. It's sad. NONE I repeat NONE of the band members are gay. Just leave them to get on with their music, It's good music so what should it matter what it's about?!?!
