Little Talks Lyrics
I don't like walking around this old and empty house
So hold my hand I'll walk with you my dear
The stairs creak as you sleep it's keeping me awake
It's the house telling you to close your eyes
Somedays I can't even...

I thought this song was different than those interpretations, but i think you guys might be right.
"I don't like walking around this old and empty house"
( I thought it was a widow who's husband died recently, she feels the house is empty w/o him )
"So hold my hand I'll walk with you my dear"
( I thought this might be like his ghost talking to her )
"The stairs creak as you sleep it's keeping me awake"
( More of him being a ghost )
"It's the house telling you to close your eyes"
( He's telling her to go to sleep )
"Somedays I can't even trust myself"
( Just her not knowing what to do w/o him )
"'Cause though the truth may vary
This ship will carry our bodies safe to shore"
( Like they are eventually going to meet again )
"Well tell her that I miss our little talks"
( Him just missing her )
"Soon it will be over and buried with our past"
( Foreshadowing )
"We used to play outside when we were young and full of life and full of love"
( Nostalgia )
"Your mind is playing tricks on you my dear"
( Her seeing his ghost )
"You're gone, gone, gone away
I watched you disappear
All that's left is a ghost of you"
( Cus he's dead..)
"Now we're torn, torn, torn apart
There's nothing we can do
Just let me go, we'll meet again soon"
( This might be farfetched but i thought she was trying to end her life because she wanted him to let her die so they will 'meet again soon' )
"Now wait, wait, wait for me
Please hang around"
( He doesn't want her to die )
"I'll see you when I fall asleep"
( Like she seems him when she sleeps, so they can be together in her dreams )
And thats what i thought...maybe a little out there, but if you listen to the song, you can seriously picture this scenario...and when it plays the "Hey!" happy parts i feel like she is remembering happy memories of them together doing things...sorry i think of this in terms of a music video haha

Seems to be about an older couple who have been married for many years and now the wife is suffering from alzhiemers disease. It's a sad story of what they are going through with the wife struggling through this tragedy trying to keep her memories and just get through everyday functions. The husband who is dying inside as he sees his wife disappear a little each day trys to keep her comforted as this terrible thing progresses. He reflects on how things were when they were young and how he misses their conversations. There seems to be a part where she tells him not to take anything she says to hearts when she's not herself. He seems to try to pull her back when he sees moments of her normal self. This song should be the banner for the fight against a terrible plight.

I think he is dead and she can't stop thinking of him. He tells her that he will hold her hand while she's walking alone. It's killing him to see her being so sad. He misses their little talks they had. I'd say that she's talking about him and he answers from afterlife... He wants her to let him go and forget him so she can be happy again, because they will meet again anyway when she dies too.
"You're gone gone gone away
I watched you disappear
All that's left is a ghost of you
Now we're torn torn torn apart, there's nothing we can do
Just let me go we'll meet again soon
Now wait wait wait for me
Please hang around
I'll see you when I fall asleep"
Thats the part I mean. They will see each other, when she sleeps. They will see each other in her dreams!

I agree with most people on their interpretations saying how she's a widow and her husbands dead but more specifically I have a slightly different interpretation. I think tha her husband is just very ill and she can't talk to him anymore because he's dying. Eventually he dies and before he dies maybe, she made a promise to him or something that keeps her from trying to commit suicide. Like when it says "just let me go we'll meet again soon" she feels like whatever she said or did for him before he died is keeping her from dying. But eventually whether it's from old age or just sickness she's starting to die. Now, she's saying "I'll see you when I fall to sleep" which means she now slipping away and finally dying. Which means she'll finally get to see him.
That's what I personally think but, I could always be 100% wrong.
anonymous Nov 6th, 11:22pm report
could the line about the ship carrying safety to shore have anything to do with Greek mythology and the boat that carried the dead away?

Speaking with Interview Magazine, Hilmarsdóttir explained the song's meaning: "How we usually make our lyrics is, Raggi and I, sometimes we come up with stories or situations. That one is about a relationship. Sometimes we haven't wanted to give too much away. We like people to read their own things in the lyrics. I guess I could share it. It's about a couple and the husband passed away and it's from the conversation between the two of them. We don't know if she's going crazy or if someone's actually there. We've kind of been inspired by people that lived in my house. This old couple that lived there for 30 years. The woman passed away, so it was kind of different."

Ok this song what i get from it is like a relationship right and they had a fight and said things they didn't mean to say and now they are not with each other and so hes telling her its ok and she see's him in her dreams and they will be with each other again as lovers they just need time away for a while yea thats what i got from this song.

My interpretation is very different from what most believe. I think it's about a girl suffering from depression and delusions caused by her losing a loved one (let's say her sister.) and the man she loves is trying to help her, but she won't accept help.
"Hey! Hey! Hey!" Him getting her attention
"I don't like walking around this old and empty house" It isn't really empty, she is empty inside.
"So hold my hand, I'll walk with you, my dear" He's trying to understand her pain.
"The stairs creak as I sleep, it's keeping me awake" The sounds in her mind.
"It's the house telling you to close your eyes" He tries to convince her to ignore the delusions.

Given that 'King and Lionheart' was about her brother being taken from her because of a divorce (the king possibly being their father and Lionheart being her brother), this song could be about her hating being in a place that reminds her of growing up with someone who is now nothing more than a memory.
She's now alone without him, and as she's trying to sleep alone, being kept away by all the sounds, she knows he's out there asleep soundly somewhere. His voice of comfort is a whimsical memory. "It's the house telling you to close your eyes."
"I'll see you when I fall asleep" affirms the idea that they'll both be together in their dreams to play like they did when they were young and the family was still intact.
"You're gone away, there's nothing we can do" affirms the idea of children being unable to do anything about the parents separating and tearing them apart from one another.
I used to think it was a song about an unconfident woman in a relationship where the man tries to reassure her that they could still have a great relationship if she'd only stop listening to the little voice in her head that told her some little slight had been done by him, that some new place they had to move to was no good, that everything was just ruined.
Most people here seem to be thinking about how elderly people go through crises of memory loss or madness, but did you ever think the madness was just a metaphor for children being confused and torn apart by the adults who control their lives?
anonymous Jun 18th, 6:48pm report
it could be about a husband's wife with a deathly sickness resulting in hallucinations and brain damage and so the husband is trying to stop her from dying (she dies near the end) or its a plague and so theyre both in the isolation camps and the wife is dying and the husband will eventually die too
(a little dark when you think about it)
anonymous Jun 18th, 6:33pm report
my interpretation is that it is about an old couple where the woman is being driven into insanity because of an accident and losing her memory (possibly brain damage) and is now considering committing suicide because she cant take it but the husband doesnt want her to die and is relentless in trying to stop her from her own self-destruction and wants her to remember and so during the long pause with no music she commits suicide (or attempts to resulting in a mortal injury) and shes slipping away from her husband (" wait for me please hang around" in the song is the husband is either saying not to finish killing herself or to die if she was dying) and then here she dies which is the reason for the lack of conversation between the couple.
"ill see you when i fall asleep" saying that she will still dream about him in the afterlife or return as a ghost.
anonymous Jun 7th, 2013 6:58pm report
How anyone can't see this is about the man being dead is beyond me. I've lived with a family member with dementia for 10 years caring for them, well past when they made any intelligible sense or could do a thing for themselves, and I don't find this to be about it... at all. The lyrics hold moments if that, but on closer examination those parts don't hold up overall.
I don't like walking around this old and empty house.
- The woman says this. She has lost the someone she lives with and loved. The house, as she says, is now old and empty.
So hold my hand, I'll walk with you my dear
- The man says this, I prefer to think of this as in her mind (this does NOT make her crazy, just grief stricken), but others may interpret it as a ghost or something similar.
The stairs creak as I sleep, it's keeping me awake
- She can't sleep, if you've ever lost someone that's lived in a house with you, the whole feeling of being there without them is hard. Especially at night.
It's the house telling you to close your eyes
- Guy says this. He wants her to sleep, or at least, she wants to imagine that's what he'd be telling her.
Some days I can't even dress myself.
- Grief stricken.
It's killing me to see you this way.
- This is what he would tell her, or anyone that loves her would be thinking.
'Cause though the truth may vary this ship will carry our bodies safe to shore.
- I believed this is saying whether or not his voice us really there with her, no matter the outcome, they'll eventually see one another again.
There's an old voice in my head that's holding me back
- She has memories of a past where she was "full of live and love" as she mentions later, that side of her is stopping her from committing suicide. It also happens to be his voice, the place those memories are rooted.
Well tell her that I miss our little talks.
- The guy says this. As in, he misses that side of her, too. He wants her to get better. He also is no longer around to have them, so that's part of it too.
Soon it will all be over, buried with our past
- Either she too is approaching death/going to commit suicide.
We used to play outside when we were young and full of life and full of love.
- He's reminding her of the past, what things used to be like. This is the farthest line from helping her I've seen, mostly agreeing with her mindset that things were better back then.
Some days I feel like I'm wrong when I am right.
- She does not want to admit he is gone. She doesn't know what to feel or how to move on.
Your mind is playing tricks on you my dear.
- Again his voice, but this is where I think his voice is telling her the voice is the trick; he isn't there any longer, she just can't stop hearing his voice in her own mind. She allows his voice to acknowledge this fact.
Don't listen to a word I say Hey! The screams all sound the same.
- He's telling her not to listen to him; he isn't really there. It's just her own mind talking to herself. The "screams" are the rest of her mind in the grief. Everything in her mind is a jumble, even what he has to say, because his "thoughts" as all just a part of that, and so untrustworthy along with everything else she's thinking.
You're gone, gone, gone away, I watched you disappear. All that's left is a ghost of you. Now we're torn, torn, torn apart, there's nothing we can do, just let me go, we'll meet again soon. Now wait, wait, wait for me, please hang around I'll see you when I fall asleep.
- The woman signs all of this. Which doesn't bode well for her figure plans, especially since she's just acknowledged that he's gone, a ghost, and she watched him disappear (die), and that she'll see him again soon; when she falls asleep. Maybe just in her dreams, but she may have also just OD.

I honestly think it is about a girl that is slowly but surely going crazy. And she is either married or dating her childhood friend, and slowly in the song she gets sicker and sicker through the lyrics until finally she dies at
"You're gone, gone, gone away
I watched you disappear
All that's left is a ghost of you"
And I think that the guy ends up killing himself to be with her again at the lyrics
"Just let me go, we'll meet again soon Now wait, wait, wait for me Please hang around I'll see you when I fall asleep"
As He kills himself and they are together again after death, and she is sane now. I don't know, I just love how they made a sad song sound so happy, its well saddly happy? XD
anonymous May 13th, 2013 5:17pm report
my put in it is the man is trying to talk the woman out of depression. but the alzheimers explaination sounds good as well.
anonymous Apr 26th, 2013 4:41pm report
This is a song that demonstrates a woman losing her memories to Alzheimer's Disease. The struggles affect her husband, so he is constantly trying to make her understand that it's okay & he's there for her. She says to him "Just let me go we'll meet again soon." She is saying this because she knows that she will soon lose her memory for good and forget who he is altogether, so she wants him to know that they will meet again one day.
I'm sorry guys..not what you think. This is a paedophile. She hears creaks because it announces his arrival. May be in an orphange...he protects her. The "screams all sound the same" because nobody answers them. Adults don't always take children seriously.."don't listen to a word I say"... as kids they wanted "a ship to carry us, bodies away from shore"....they were hurt, dreaming of better...
Not certain...but would guess band wasn't original artist....or if it is...that person has come to grips and done well...
Love the melody....kudos to them!
...of men and MONSTERS...
Its in the details....

Also, when it mentions "the ship will carry our bodies safe to shore", I think the ship is supposed to be life, and they will get out of this safely, and together, because the shore is like the end or heaven.
anonymous Apr 2nd, 2013 4:21am report
I always thought this song was about the girls mental illness. I thought she suffered from schizophrenia, which is when there is a voice in your head (kinda like a conscience) that tells you what to do, but not usually a good deed. She was saying there's a voice in her head that's holding her back, and he says to tell her that he misses the times when he could talk to her, without the voice making her second-guess him. That is what I interpret this song as, but I believe that it's one of those songs in which it was made to be left open and puzzle it's listeners.
anonymous Mar 31st, 2013 3:55pm report
I think the song can be interpreted in different ways (purposely by the band). To me it speaks on the memory of a women still in love. Seeing as young could simply represent an earlier time, and does not have to literally mean a decade ago. She could just be miserable without her partner, dreaming of what they once had. Only to want it to end in either in acceptance or suicide.
I think this song is about a girl hurting herself. When she says"somedays I can't even trust myself" I think she means she can't bare living so she feels like she needs to die. When the guy says"I can't bare to see you this way" he is telling her she is beautiful and he doesn't like to watch her suffer. "Though the truth may vary this ship will carry our bodies safe to shore" means if she kills herself shell be happier and she will be safe "the screams all sound the same" is she screams for the same reason. I thought this cause of my experience with self harm so thnx for reading this(I guess)
anonymous Mar 20th, 2013 3:24pm report
This may seem a little far-fetched, but this is my interpretation:
A woman used to live in this house when she was younger and her father died when she was young and she was really close to him. Her mother couldn't live with the burden of the house, so they moved away. When the woman grew up and got married, her new family moved back into this house and she is seeing and hearing her father's "ghost" in the house.
Everyone else's interpretations seem very legit and i could see this song being about any of them. ♥

I beloved this songs meaning is the story of romio and juliet for example when it says hey its every one telling them they cant be together and when it says wait its romio telling Juliet to wait and when it says screams all sound the same its Juliet saying the people saying she cant be with romio all sound alike and when it says though the truth may vary the ship will carry our bodies safe to sore its Juliet's way of saying what they say is not real and that when both of them die they can finally be together in a better place without judgement.
