Our Lady Peace: Innocent Meaning

Innocent Lyrics

Oh, Johnny wishes he was famous
Spends his time alone
In the basement
With Lennon and Cobain
A guitar and a stereo
While he wishes he
Could escape this
It all seems so contagious
Not to be yourself and faceless
In a song that has no...

This song is about people that feel helpless and they do things that might seem weird or people don't approve of. Basically, its saying we are who we are and were innocent. Anything we do is becuase of our judgement. This can also relate to a suicide song if you look really deep.

For the most part there is an innocence in us and the need to do what is right but over time we get hurt and become cold and start to become someone else, the people that hurt us, and hurt others so that we wontt get hurt again. But deep down inside of us is that innocence that we had to begin with. It has just been covered up by years of pain. And sometimes some of us can put that pain aside and find that innocence again.

And also we all have different ways of dealing with pain and some of us are judged for that because others do not understand it.

It's really about the beauty of innocence highlighted by the corrupted view you meet when you face the shattered window of adolescence looking out onto reality. On one hand the song is heartbreaking because you see the children - which is basically what they are - losing the gift most children have of an unmarred and idyllic world, but on the other hand it can be uplifting as the chorus seems to confirm that we are all these children inside regardless of our age, we all have their innocence throughout our lives and that's why we can relate to the song as every time a new revelation of the way our world strays from right and goodness is met we feel the ache as though we were only children ourselves, and the affirmation that we're all innocent is really the most powerful thing anyone can say to themselves when faced with this, because united in our innocence and our dejection at the world's lack thereof we are still one common human race, capable of overcoming it all through our unity.

I think that this song is about the secret war that rages within most kids in their mid-teens. Most boys that don't want to become sports buffs want to become rockstars. Most girls of the same age always think they're fat (weather they are or not) and want to dance, or do ballet, or be a cheerleader, etc.
That's not to say that all kids want this, just most, just the steriotypical.

Also, it's about the singer remembering when they were a slave to all of these wants and needs and then they 'broke out of their chains' and relized that they're childish dreams of uncorrupted minds.
