   He wrote this when he couldn't sleep one night, so he took his parents rowboat out onto the lake and fell alseep in it. He woke up and saw the sunrise. That's what inspired the song. And I don't think his girlfriend died, she just went to college. :)

    I like what you said. Though I agree with most the people saying the real meaning is re. his high school sweetheart, the use of the lighthouse and ethereal sky would evoke a strong connection to God for some. So for me, it made me think of Christ singing to us. Yes.. all of us :-)

    Why do you have to attack the opinions of others? while i do agree this song is about him missing his girlfriend, a relationship with God is described as a love above all others. God is not just a man that is an authority figure in our lives, but rather someone that loves us despite all. God is in love with us.     This song has a sad meaning. He is basically saying he misses her and he would write to her, if he could, cause he wishes to be with her again. He is also saying how things are not the same without her, and never will be. He is mentioning some of the things they might have done together "I'll miss your arms around me", "I'll watch the night turn light blue..." "takes two to whisper quietly". He is also saying how he hasn't been able to sleep lately, probly thinking of her. When he thinks of her, he proby feels her presense, or is with her spiritually, cause he doesnt feel so alone when he thinks of her.     this is a christian song about how it can feel to be away from jesus as he keeps on saying 'Oh darling I wish you were here' and as it says in the bible, 'in christ we are never alone' and he says in his song' when I think of you I don't feel so alone'. he is also the lead singer of 'relient k' which is simmilar in the way that it hints to God through its lyrics, but usually doesn't mention the actual words of the christian faith (so it sounds like he is talking about a girl, while sneakily getting the message out to people who will usually close their ears when they even hear the word 'jesus'.

    The guy who wrote this (Adam Young I believe) had a girlfriend who died in a car crash he wrote this song to vent his feelings - in the song he spent a lot of time with her and now he stays to himself, many people think he is emo/depressed(id know people say that about me all the time) but in reality he is to lost in his thoughts to pay attention to people.     It's about his girlfriend/wife who moved away/died and how he misses her. Very deep, yet somehow lighthearted and sweet at the same time.
