I think the main theme of this song is when a couple goes "Back to the room where it all began" (the place they became a couple) to seek refuge from the hardships of their life and they try to reverse the situation. Ok, here goes. Back to the street where we began Feeling as good as lovers can, you know Yeah, we're feeling so good -the couple remember their good times back then Picking up things we shouldn't read It looks like the end of history as we know It's just the end of the world Back to the street where we began Feeling as good as love, you could, you can -this paragraph portrays to the wrong things they've done (or experienced) and, if my theory is right, they're going "Back to the street where we began" Into a place where thoughts can bloom Into a room where it's nine in the afternoon And we know that it could be And we know that it should And you know that you feel it too -in that room, they try to change their failed life 'Cause it's nine in the afternoon And your eyes are the size of the moon You could 'cause you can so you do We're feeling so good Just the way that we do When it's nine in the afternoon Your eyes are the size of the moon You could 'cause you can so you do We're feeling so good -ah, the chorus... when it's nine in the afternoon, they feel so good and they try to change their lives for better because they think they can ("You could 'cause you can so you do") Back to the street Down to our feet Losing the feeling of feeling unique Do you know what I mean? -this is somewhat a proof of my theory that the couple is experincing hardships -this may be wrong but, this is my interpretation...

From what I understand about the delay of the new album, the band had secluded themselves in a cabin to write new songs. They were not happy with what they had come up with so they went back to their home town. It was there that the inspiration came to them "Back to the street where we began" referring to their hometown, where they wrote the first album. The title, Nine in the Afternoon, is such because when they started writing and were 'on a roll', they were in a room and not with the outside world. Therefore, the time may as well be nine in the afternoon, which doesn't exist. Also, "Into a place, where thoughts can bloom Into a room where it's nine in the afternoon And we know that it could be..." where the "thoughts can bloom" is the band actually being able to write songs. They are now in a place where the lyrics, ideas, and music are coming to them. Long story short, I think this song is about the band finally coming up with songs they approve of to be on their new album.

I think this song is about being "high on love." What leads me to think this: And we know that it could be And we know that it should And you that you feel it too {a shared feeling of love and passion} Your eyes are the size of the moon You could 'cause you can so you do We're feeling so good {one sign of being high is your eyes widening or pupils getting smaller and making your eyes look bigger} Back to the place Where we used to say Man it feels good to feel this way {another reference to being high} Back to the street, back to the place, Back to the room where it all began {back to the place where they met/became a couple}

When they started writing on pretty. odd, and locked themselve up in a cabin, they didn't manage to write songs like they wanted. they started all over and went back to the very first practice space they ever used [back to the place where it all began]. so they were in there for like, 10 hours or something and when they came out, they didn't realise what time it was and their biologic clock or something was like...confused (?). and one of them said: i feel like it's seven in the afternoon or someting... they liked it and changed it to "nine in the afternoon" [into a room where it's nine in the afternoon. this is what they said in an interview i saw on youtube... The first line "Back to the street where we began, feeling as good as lovers can you know, yeah were feeling so good" is talking about the band. They are back to the place where they first began as a band, writing music together. They are feeling good because it is something they love to do. "Picking up things we shouldn't read" means all the older music that influenced them, and that a lot of people and critics gave them a negative rap for that because they started out as a pop punk band and are very changed now. The title "nine in the afternoon" came about when the drummer, Spencer said it felt like seven in the afternoon in their windowless practice room. Ryan Ross, the guitarist, changed in to nine to fit the chorus better. "Losing the feeling of feeling unique" is pretty obvious, they lost their feeling of unique-ness. They are always compared to other bands, so they changed their sound. "Back to the place where we used to say man it feels good to feel this way" means they are glad to be back in the studio making music.

Okay, so...basically, it's about getting high. I watched an interview with Brendon Urie(hottest guy EVER)and he said it was kind of an idea they got from the bands their parents used to listen to. And their parents probably listened to bands from the sixties, the era of weed.

This song and many others are about tripping on acid. Its pretty obvious from looking at their song titles. anyone who has done acid will completely agree. I mean come on The Mountains In The Middle Of The Cabin?

I personally haven't found any meaning to this song,but those of you that do,congrats.All i know is how the name was created. While writing the song,Brendon Urie asked his band mates what time it was.Spencer Smith then commented that it was seven in the afternoon. After deciding to use that as their title,the changed it to nine in the afternoon,to better fit in the song.
