This is the first track on "Wish You Were Here." It's basically an introduction to the album, which is about how fame can drive you crazy.
The name "crazy diamond" means that whoever is called one is an eccentric, not crazy. A crazy person is just crazy plain and simple. A crazy diamond is crazy but can touch lives and make waves with their insanity. The subject of this song is definitley former guitarist Syd Barret, who went insane from the fame, drugs and emotional heartache that came with both. Lead singer Roger Waters urges him in this song to continue shining because he has the potential.
Something really cool about this song is that it has a little over an 8 minute intro.

This song is about the musical career of Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd's first singer/guitarist. Barrett was praised for his guitar and songwriting skills, but unfortunately went clinically insane due to extensive use of psychadelic drugs.

The song is a tribute to Syd. Although he got sick, he is still as precious as a diamond and is a guide light for them (shine on).

Pink Floyd is my religion and I never noticed the "S"hine on "Y"ou crazy "D"iamond (SYD) thing. Good job guys, you're all right with your interpretations; this song's about Syd.

An interesting thing about this song is that allegedly Syd Barret arrived out of the blue with no invitation or notice to abbey road when Pink Floyd was recording the song.

Come on guys....the SYD thing from 'S'hine on 'Y'ou crazy 'D'iamond is crazy...its a co-incidence.....just like the co-incidence that Syd suddenly visited the studio in which the song was being recorded,and met the PF members almost after 7 years....it was highly co-incidental and roger waters broke down to tears...and David did not even recognize Syd initially....but the SYD thing is crazy!
