You have to admit this song has a little conection with Tom and the break-up of Blink 182. Like when mark says, "I listen to you talk, but talk is cheap" It's most likely about, at the time Tom was syaing how rad his band was going to be and how his music would change the world and Mark saying that talk is cheap why don't you show what your band is capable of.
And the part when Mark says, "My mouth is filled with blood from trying not to speak" is how he didn' want to say anything to the press or any one and talking about what he thinks about Tom and his band.
And when Marks ings about The lives that we destroyed it's about all the fans of Blink 182 and how the break up affected some kids a lot.

"let's slit our wrists" refers to tom's little departure to emo
"burn down something beautiful" is the dismantling of blink
"I listen to you cry" is tom's ranting about how he hated blink
"I cry for less attention" is mark not wanting to be the greatest rock band ever
"but both my hands are tied and I'm pushed in to the deep end" is how tom left the band with nothing, while he was planning his own project
"lay rotting where I fall, I'm dead from bad intentions" refers to how mark has had a very tough couple of years since the break up.

Yeh I agree with the guy above...
A few more things....
'and my mouth is filled with blood
from trying not to speak ' ... Is actualy because the head of there record label told the band not to tell the press the real thing that was going on with the breakup, the record lamel guy told them to just say evrythign was fine.
'in foreign dressing rooms
i'm empty with the need to'....... Thats because tom canceld the tour they had after the uk tour while they were still playing the uk tour, hence the ' foreign dressing rooms'

So on TRL on MTV the other day (+44) was on and Mark was talking about how "No it isn't" is all about the break-up of Blink. He was saying how this song was basically his way of coping. And how all of his feelings about the break-up just poured out into these lyrics.

Okay, for all you retards who think this song is not about Tom and the break-up of Blink 182, you are wrong and stupid. Mark has said it more than once. And the song is so obvious, any one can tell it's about Tom and the break-up.

Dude, you're full of shit?
Of course it's about Tom. In a recent interview he even said that this song was about him, cause he's basically the reason that Blink broke up.
When they asked him if he missed Tom he simply said.
"I miss the old Tom. But now, no. I don't miss him at all."

Well when it says lets slit our wrists I see that as Tom getting what he wanted to be "serious" so he burned down something beautiful which that would be Blink-182 it self

Mark confirmed that this is about Tom....this is what I think
Please understand
This isn't just goodbye
This is I can't stand you (his feelings to tom)
This is where the road crashed into the ocean
It rises all around me
And now we're barely breathing
A thousand faces we'll choose to ignore (ignoring the fans etc. who want blink back and Mark wants to but can't)
[chorus]
Curse my enemies forever
Lets slit our wrists and burn down something beautiful ( He curses Tom, for obvious reasons, and burn down blink cause mark could've hired a guitarist and didnt....ending blink 182)
This desperation leaves me overjoyed
With fading lights that leads us past the lives that we destroy (about the fans again...and the workers on the tour promised 6 months of work)
I listen to you cry
I cry for less attention (Travis was hassled by the press about the "Hiatus" and constantly reminded them about the fact that there was 2 other band members)
But both my hands are tied
And I'm pushed into the deep end (Mark is accused of things by tom like booking shows without telling him)
I listen to you talk but talk is cheap (About Tom's "world changing" music and nothing to back it up at the time)
And my mouth is filled with blood
From trying not to speak ( This is how Mark and Travis were "biting their tongues" hence the "mouth filled with blood" while Tom did all this talking and throwing accusations)
So search for an excuse
And someone to believe you (now they want to see if Tom tries to make an excuse, and that they won't accept it)
In foreign dressing rooms (they were in England when Tom quit I believe)
I'm empty with the need to
Please understand
This isn't just goodbye
This is I can't stand you

The first time I heard this song, I connected it with Tom, blink 182 and the break up of one of the world's most loved bands.
I'll explain why.
The first verse:
Please understand
This isn't just goodbye
This is I can't stand you
This is where the road crashed into the ocean
It rises all around me
And now we're barely breathing
A thousand faces we'll choose to ignore
Mark is trying to say that it isn't goodbye, he knows he and Tom will see eachother again, or even communicate again, but at this present time he just can't stand Tom. When he speaks about the road crashing into the ocean he is trying to say that the future he thought would continue with Blink has now ended and the effect of it has hurt them (possiby Mark and Travis) alot. The A thousand faces we'll choose to ignore, is talking about the fans. And having to froget about the Blink fans because they feel that they have let them down.
The Chorus:
Curse my enemies forever
Let's slit our wrists and burn down something beautiful
This desperation leaves me overjoyed
With fading lights that lead us past the lives that we destroy
Its talking about how he has to try to ignore all the backlash fan will be giving him and even cursing Tom. Its talking about the death of blink and now its over, the burning down of everthing it was, he knows how great the band was and all the lives of fan's that will be destroyed because of it.
The third verse:
I listen to you cry
A cry for less attention
But both my hands are tied
And I'm pushed into the deep end
I listen to you talk but talk is cheap
And my mouth is filled with blood
From trying not to speak
So search for an excuse
And someone to believe you
In foreign dressing rooms
I'm empty with the need to
This verse is very strong. And its very much about Tom. Mark hears Tom in interviews, and hears him talking about the band, but drawing the attention away from himself, and shunning away that it was his decision to leave Blink.
But he can't talk about it anymore, because he has been pushed as far as he can go, and its better not to say anything more about it, then what's already been said.
Nevertheless, its taken its hold on him, and he's wanting to speak to Tom, he's wanting to ask him why and how he could just leave his best friends, and it hurts so bad that his "mouth is filled with blood - from trying not to speak".
Mark knows that Tom has made excuses on his part about why he left blink and he's basically saying find someone to believe your lies. Find a fan that will agree with what you are saying.
-The repetition of the chorus- x2
Then the last verse:
Lay rotting where I fall
I'm dead from bad intentions
Suffocated and embalmed
And now all our dreams are cashed in
You swore you wouldn't lose then lost your brain
You make a sound that feels like pain
Its all over, and all the hurt that has been caused has taken its toll on Mark. The dreams that they had when they were in a band together, is no more. He is trying to run this reality through his head. "You swore you wouldn't lose" is about Blink again, Tom in the past probably said that this band will be together always, or there is a great future with blink and they wouldn't lose or come short of being the best punk rock band ever, but he lost his brain with wanting to leave blink and then start a new band without his other two best friends.
"You make a sound that feels like pain" it's about all the talk he has done, the talking through managers, the new band, its all the sounds of him, through him that just comes down to pain for Mark.

This song isn't exactly about Tom, but Mark did write it about Blink 182 breaking up. Listen to the words. To begin with, it really wasn't goodbye, it was I can't stand you. "a thousand faces we'll choose to ignore": fans, the break up started in the middle of a tour, Tom wanted to cancel dates, so all of those faces get ignored. The second verse tells the story best. The band broke up in a dressing room in Europe ("in foreign dressing rooms"). "all our dreams are cashed in." Mark says it himself in an interview, this song is about the break up. you're stupid.

Mark has said that it IS about the break up of Blink. He said that because he didn't come out in the media and say anything he wrote it out in a song

(I can't spell for shit)
Ok so this is about the breakup of blink
Mark has said it in countless interviews so shut up
"Please understand
This isn't just goodbye
This is I can't stand you"
How the end of blink ended because Tom was being an ass. Tom was controlling the band to much and Mark and Travis tried to tell him that but he got all pissed and yelled Tom and Mark got in a fight (verbally) and Tom stormed out of the studio.
"Curse my enemies forever"
How Tom didn't even call in person to quit the band and he has not talked to blink since.
"Lets slit our wrists" toms departure into emoism and being all serious
"and burn down something beautiful" the breakup of blink
"With fading lights that leads us past the lives that we destroy" refers to all the people that got fired because Tom refused to do the European tour so thy had to fire every one who had been hired for it.
"I listen to you cry
I cry for less attention" how tom didn't want any body to know about why they broke up
"But both my hands are tied/and I'm pushed into the deep end" - How the band's manager told him not to talk about the bands brake up, the deep end referring to the press.
"I listen to you talk but talk is cheap" how Tom said his band was like awesome and would change the world, but Mark thought it wasn't that good
"And my mouth is filled with blood
From trying not to speak" trying not to speak about Tom, the break up, and a&a to the press.
Tom is gay for screwing up blink and a&a sucks balls. Have a nice day!

I'm going to end this debate!
Please understand
This isn't just goodbye
his is I can't stand you
-The way Tom walked away, he was speaking through his manager. He didn't even say goodbye literally.
Code silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion.
This is where the road crashed into the ocean
It rises all around me
And now we're barely breathing
A thousand faces we'll choose to ignore
-He's referring to the fans and people involved in Blink.
Curse my enemies forever
Let's slit our wrists and burn down something beautiful
This desperation leaves me overjoyed
With fading lights that lead us past the lives that we destroy
-At this point he is speaking from Tom's point of view and a bitter, egocentric view it is. "Something beautiful" is: you guessed it people; it's blink.
I listen to you cry
A cry for less attention
But both my hands are tied
And I'm pushed into the deep end
I listen to you talk but talk is cheap
And my mouth is filled with blood
From trying not to speak
-Tom was putting terms on the band. Calculating what the band will and will not tolerate. Where they can or cannot tour. The songs they can or cannot play. Personally, I think this is why the last blink album was the way it was. Feeling this not included or miss you.-
So search for an excuse
And someone to believe you
In foreign dressing rooms
I'm empty with the need to
Curse my enemies forever
Let's slit our wrists and burn down something beautiful
This desperation leaves me overjoyed
With fading lights that lead us past the lives that we destroy
.Again Tom's point of view
Curse my enemies forever
Let's slit our wrists and burn down something beautiful
This desperation is leaving me overjoyed
With fading lights that lead us past the lives that we destroy
Please understand
Lay rotting where I fall
I'm dead from bad intentions
Suffocated and embalmed
And now all our dreams are cashed in
You swore you wouldn't lose then lost your brain
You make a sound that feels like pain
-I think Tom really lost his brain. AvA? wtf? world war 2? Artificial inspiration. Over sentimental emo c..p! There is to much tragedy and melodrama in life already. We don't need AvA-I'm referring to the band not the daughter.
So please understand
This isn't just goodbye
This is I can't stand you
Anyways great song. Blink was something alright...
