To a certain degree, I think you're both right. I think it is saying "California rest in peace" as a way of saying California isn't the glamorous place it used to be. He is saying California is going to the dogs (also known as the untalented bands) and they are turning California into a completly different place. The girl is, metophorically, California.

Actually anonymous, I was watching an interview of the Red Hot Chili Peppers on MTV, and they asked them if the song was about a factual character. They said that Dani California is in fact, not a real person, that they sometimes need a fictional character to muse them. So all that about it being anthony's friend is not true, because he said it himself!

Honestly...I think the songs anthony writes are mostly different stories put into one song. Example, in the dani california music video when we see the "nirvana unplugged" scene these lyrics follow, "...Down in the badlands she was saving the best for last
it only hurts when I laugh
gone too fast"
i believe this is a direct reference to Kurt Cobain (also see the reference in the song 'californication').

In addition, "dani" refers to the multiple women in anthony's life ("dani" was also used in 'by the way').

Anthony's words can be twisted and turned just as easily as anyone else's...But that is what makes songwritting an art! And anthony's art is no exception!

I think this song is about a girl named Dani California that Anthony Keadus might have dated who was really pretty, it says, who lived her life on the edge and was a sort of trouble maker it says in the song (she was stealin another breath I love my baby to death)

Ok, ok ladies, break it up. Flea is called michael balzary and anthony is called Anthony Kiedis (there's also John frus-cian-te lol) ak is most certainly not gay.

Anyway on to Dani and her story. Dani, to Anthony, is every girl he ever met. I think the line 'papa was a copper and mama was a hippie' refers to a girl, although her name is not stated in his biography, 'scar tissue' he met with her and they became attracted (though he wasn't serious about anything)and he then found she was only 14 years old, and her father, the chief of police in Louisiana (I think) which is also mentioned had the whole place out looking for her.
Dani also appears in 'by the way', singing songs beneath the marquee and as the pregnant girl in 'Californication' though her name is not mentioned.
California, being the beloved home place of the red hots is the perfect sirname.
The music video, just to say, shows all the different eras of music and them being the summary at the end of all these things.

actually numbver seven is RAMSTEIN a german band, very popular one. In the US they might be known for tha video / soundtrack for the movie XXX (not porn, Triple x an action movie) called BANG BANG. In the video there's fire in the arena or something like that. Some of you might have seen it. But I'm 100% sure it is Ramstein , not Misfits

I'm not gonna go too in depth with the song as I can see it could be taken from several different points of view.

"California rest in peace" - Dead, obviously.
"Simaltanious release" - She was pregnant (Backed up in the song Californication "Teenage bride with a baby inside")
"California show your teeth" - Had to be identified by dental records.

This is just my thoughts on it.

its not RAMSTEIN or the germs that's in the video. its either the misfits or samhain.

you can tell because of the devilock that anthony is wearing. The reason that it could be samhain is becuase danzig was the only one that had one it that band and its huge.

the reason why its not ramstein is because its going in chronilogical order of rock history and the infuence that. I don't think ramstein was very popular in the late 70's early 80's

It's Hendrix not Prince. Why would Prince be in the 70's? It's also Motley Crue not Poison. The blue neck band and the point to the camera with the drum stick was vintage Tommy Lee from the Home Sweet Home video.It's also Danzig with Misfits influence look at the stance with the mike stand pure Glen. Also Beatles with some Freddie and the Dreamers influnce.Also Bowie with some New York Dolls influence. All in all a great vid with a lot of cool references. Love the P Funk with Bootsie Collins glasses and the mother ship and all. Trivia Question time what album did George Clinton produce for the RHCP?

Uhm, John Frusciante said in an interview, that the band that everyone (including me) was the beatles is the monkees.. And then I understood the next part as being the beatles in the time of their lonely hearts club band-era. But I see it fit at hendrix, but this is just my point of view. And I'm pretty sure that it's the misfits, unknown one. Hugs :)

Dani is a representation of all of the girls in Anthony's life. The film clip for Dani California is not meant to be particular bands just genres as flea has said!
