Yes, Sting has said many many times that this song was written for his father, who wished him a life at sea, but I don't actually believe it is about his dad?! From the lyrics, I feel it is certainly about loss, but more about the end of a loving relationship, where one party is still very much in love with the other, but must face eternity without them, I mean you wouldn't ask someone who had recently passed on 'Why Should I Cry For You?', 'Why would you want me to?', that's obvious! A truly great analogy and play on words, one of my favourites of all time.
If you're a fan of this song I can't recommend the 'Live In Berlin' version from 2010 featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, phenomenal!!
